Mera Peak is part of the Mahalangur Himalayan range in the Barun section of the Himalaya. The peak is in the Sankhuwasabha district of Nepal in the Koshi Province. The mountain is considered as the highest permitted trekking peak of Nepal. At an altitude of 6476 m, the mountain is classified as the most scenic trekking peak of Nepal. There are 3 summits of the peak. They are Mera North (6476 m), Mera Central (6461 m), and South 6065 m. Besides these summits, there are smaller unnoticeable 22 summits of the mountain.
The mountain is in such a place that climbers can enjoy the breathtaking scenery of mountains like Kanchenjunga, Everest, Choyou, Lhotse, and Makalu which are the top 10 mountains of the world. The region of Mera Peak was first explored by the team of Sir Edmund Hillary, Tenzing Norgay, Eric Shipton, and George Lowe after the successful ascent of Mt. Everest in 50’s. On May 20, 1953 the team led by Col. Jimmy Roberts and Sen Tenzing successfully climbed the mountain for the first time. They climbed Mera Central Peak and on 1975 the team of Marcel Jolly, G. Baus, and L. Honills climbed Mera North for the first time.
Col. Jimmy Roberts is regarded as the greatest ambassador of Nepal Trekking industry. He played significant roles during 1960’s to explore and identify various trekking routes of Nepal. Lots of trekking routes of Nepal were discovered and opened by the team of Col. Jimmy Roberts. Besides making routes, Roberts was heavily involved in providing training for proper and commercial establishment of trekking industry in Nepal. To honor his contribution, Nepal Government awarded him Sagarmatha National Award back in 2005 posthumously.
There are two ways to reach the trail head of the Mera Peak Climbing trekking route. Climbers can choose to start their trekking trip to Mera Base Camp either from Khari Khola or from Lukla. If you choose to take a jeep or road trip then you have to take the Salleri – Khari Khola road section. It takes about 6 to 7 hours to reach Salleri from Kathmandu and further 5 to 6 hours to reach Khari Khola from Salleri. Please note that the road is bumpy and off road in between Salleri and Khari Khola section.
Another popular way to reach the trail head of trekking route to Mera is by choosing the Lukla flight. Similar to the Everest Base Camp Trek, climbers take flight either from Kathmandu or from Manthali Airport (During Peak spring and autumn season) to Lukla.
There are two ways to follow to reach Mera Base Camp before starting the Mera Peak Climbing adventure. The Mera Base Camp Trek upper route is via Chhutanga and Zatrwa La Pass. Climbers can choose to take the Mera Circuit Trek route from Paiya – Pangomm via Surke even if they start the trek from Lukla. It is longer but provides gradual acclimatization chances. If you have chosen road trip then you have to start the trek from Khari Khola and join the Mera Circuit Trek route in Pangomm.
The trail traverses through villages like Kothe, Thaknak, and Khare. The base village for Mera Peak Climbing adventure in Nepal is Khare Village.
Basic training classes are conducted during the acclimatization rest day in Khare Village. There are no villages beyond this place. Choose months of spring (March – May) and autumn (September – November) for Mera climbing. Among these two seasons, spring is considered as an ideal time. The trekking route to the Mera Base Camp (Khare village) is through green lush forests. During spring time the blooming flowers through the blooming forests make it joyous to walk on the trail.
