Tihar Festival in Nepal: Inside the Five Nights of Light

Land in Kathmandu during Tihar (Deepawali or Diwali of India) and the first thing you notice is not a sound, it is lights!

Every doorway carries a string of small clay lamps, oil wicks flickering against the dark, and by the second night, entire neighborhoods glow instead of go quiet.

Where Dashain empties the cities as families head home, Tihar does the opposite. It lights the cities up and pulls everyone outside.

Tihar runs for five days in 2026, from November 7 to November 11, with Laxmi Puja, the main night of lights, falling on November 8.

Nepalis also call it Yamapanchak, the five days of Yama, the god of death, because each day is built around something that protects a household from him: a crow, a dog, a cow, the self, and finally, a sibling!

Tihar’s Five Days and Five Relationships Explained

Unlike Dashain, which builds toward one central ritual, Tihar gives each day its own honoree.

That structure alone tells you something about the festival’s character. It is less about a single climax and more about working through everyone and everything that keeps a household safe.

Each day builds on the one before it, so by the time Bhai Tika arrives, the festival has already worked through gratitude toward nature, animals, and the self before finally landing on family.

Kukur Tihar: The Day Dogs Become Royalty

Kukur Tihar deserves its own mention, since it is the single day most travelers ask about before they even land in Nepal!

Every dog, whether it belongs to a family or sleeps outside a corner shop, gets a marigold garland and a red tika on its forehead that morning. Street dogs that are usually ignored suddenly get treated like guests of honor, fed meat, eggs, and milk by anyone nearby.

The reasoning goes back to the same Yama mythology running through the whole festival. Dogs are considered guides through the afterlife, so honoring them on this day is a way of asking for safe passage later.

If you want to take part, buy a garland from any street vendor near Durbar Square that morning and offer it to a dog that already looks comfortable around people.

Do not chase or crowd an animal for a photo. Ask first if it belongs to someone nearby!

The Festival of Lights: What You Will See After Dark?

Laxmi Puja is where Tihar earns its reputation as the festival of lights. Families spend the afternoon sweeping and washing their homes, believing Goddess Laxmi enters only clean spaces. By evening, a small oil lamp or a string of electric lights adorns every ledge, window, and doorstep.

Rangoli patterns, made from colored powder or flower petals, spread across thresholds to guide the goddess inside.

Groups of children and young adults move door to door on this night and the two that follow, singing Deusi and Bhailo songs in exchange for small gifts of money, sweets, or food.

It is closer to caroling than performance, and most households welcome anyone who joins in, visitors included!

Walking through Patan or Bhaktapur after dusk during this stretch is worth clearing an evening for, since the old brick courtyards hold candlelight in a way modern streets do not.

Getting Around During Tihar

Tihar is considerably easier to travel through than Dashain. Shops, restaurants, and most tourist services stay open, since the festival does not send the same volume of people back to their home villages.

That said, book hotels in Kathmandu, Patan, or Bhaktapur ahead of Laxmi Puja specifically, since demand for rooms with a view of a lit-up old town rises sharply that one night.

Firecrackers are common in residential neighborhoods after dark, particularly around Laxmi Puja, so factor that into where you stay if you are a light sleeper.

Card games run through several of these nights as well, a carryover from Dashain that continues into Tihar in many households.

Tihar in Trekking Trails of Nepal

If your trek lands inside the Tihar window, you are not missing the festival by being on the trail.

On the Annapurna Base Camp trek, teahouse owners in Gurung and Magar villages still string up lamps along their porches, and it is common for a guide to bring a small garland along for any dogs guarding the lodge that night.

Along the Langtang Valley trek, Tamang villages mark Tihar with the same rhythm as Kathmandu, just on a smaller scale, and Deusi Bhailo groups sometimes make their way between teahouses in the lower valley.

On the Manaslu Circuit trek, villages along the Budhi Gandaki still light doorways after dark even at altitude, giving trekkers a version of Laxmi Puja that most visitors staying only in Kathmandu never get to see.
