Flash Flood Hits Nepal-China Border: Rasuwa to Dhading Affected

On August 26, 2026, Wednesday morning, a wall of water came down the Bhote Koshi River and changed Rasuwa in minutes.

What Happened on August 26 in Bhote Koshi – Trishuli Rivers?

At around 9 AM local time, a sudden surge of water hit the Bhote Koshi River in Rasuwa district, close to the Nepal-China border. The water came in from the Tibet side, and it moved fast.

Within an hour, it had reached Timure, Syabrubesi, Betrawati, and Trishuli Bazar. From there, it continued downstream into Nuwakot and Dhading districts.

Houses, roads, bridges, and at least six hydropower plants took direct hits. Nepal’s energy ministry said the flood disrupted around 430 megawatts of electricity supply, which is a meaningful chunk of the country’s total capacity.

How Many People Have Died? The Death Toll So Far

This is the number everyone searches for first, and it is also the hardest one to give accurately, because it kept climbing through the day.

Early reports from Nepal Police and BBC put the confirmed death toll at 17. By the afternoon, the Kathmandu Post had it at 22, with dozens more out of contact. By evening, Reuters and AFP quoted a Nepal Police spokesman putting the toll at 95, with more than 380 people listed as missing.

Among the missing are at least 341 foreign nationals, according to Nepal’s Tourism Board, including three US citizens.

Thirty-two security personnel from Nepal Police and the Armed Police Force are unaccounted for near Timure. Around 60 workers connected to a hydropower project on the Langtang Khola, including a crew that was working inside a tunnel, also lost contact on Wednesday morning.

Search and rescue is still active as we write this, so we expect these numbers to rise further before they settle.

What Caused the Rasuwa Flood?

Nepal’s Department of Hydrology and Meteorology has not issued a final conclusion yet, but the working theory is becoming clearer.

Rainfall does not appear to be the trigger. Only about 7 mm fell in the area over the previous 24 hours, which is nowhere near enough to cause a flood of this scale.

Instead, scientists at Kathmandu University and Nepal’s hydrology department believe an ice-rock avalanche came down and blocked the Lhende Khola (river), a tributary that feeds into the Bhote Koshi.

Water built up behind that natural blockage. When it gave way, the backed-up volume released downstream all at once!

A glacial lake outburst flood, or GLOF, has not been ruled out either. The upper Lhende basin holds several large glacial lakes, and a similar blockage on the same river caused a smaller flood back in July 2025.

One more detail worth flagging: a magnitude 4.4 earthquake was recorded on the Tibetan side at 8:37am, shortly before the flood reached Nepal.

Officials say the tremor may have loosened the rock and ice that set off the avalanche, but a direct link has not been confirmed. Treat that connection as a working theory for now, not a settled fact.

Is the Langtang Valley Trek Affected?

Rasuwa is not only a disaster zone in the news right now. It is the gateway district for the Langtang Valley trek and the Gosaikunda trek, and Dhunche and Syabrubesi are trailheads we send groups through every season!

Landslides and debris have damaged or completely blocked sections of the Pasang Lhamu Highway, which links Kathmandu to Dhunche and Syabrubesi.

Authorities have closed the Rasuwagadhi border crossing into Tibet! Phone and internet lines in parts of the district are down too, which is slowing both rescue work and accurate reporting out of the more remote villages.

For now, we are not sending new groups into Rasuwa district, and we advise against traveling independently to Timure, Syabrubesi, Betrawati, or Trishuli until authorities lift the current warnings.

The US Embassy in Nepal has also told American citizens in Rasuwa, Nuwakot, Dhading, Gorkha, Chitwan, and Tanahun to stay clear of riverbanks and low-lying areas and move to higher ground.

What Happens Next in Rasuwa?

Nepal’s Army, the Armed Police Force, and Nepal Police are running search and rescue operations with helicopters and medical teams.

President Ramchandra Paudel called the loss of life and property deeply saddening and asked every government agency to step up relief work. China’s president Xi Jinping has also called for continued search efforts and stronger disaster monitoring along the shared border.

Flood warnings remain active further downstream in Gorkha and Chitwan, since the extra volume of water is still moving through the river system.

Moreover, local officials have urged residents near the Trishuli River to stay alert over the next day or two.

Soon enough, the Nepal government will clear and manage the route swiftly, ensuring safe passage so trekkers can continue their journeys without concern. Nepal will be safe again!
