12/Jan/2026

Kathmandu is the capital city of Nepal and it is in a valley and has the neighboring districts of Bhaktapur and Lalitpur. Therefore, if you say places to visit in Kathmandu, then you have to refer three cities of the valley. The city is known famously as the ancient capital where temples are more than houses. It is beautifully surrounded by the green lush hills on all sides and the place has stable weather conditions. There are many places inside the valley where you can find historical evidences, architectural master pieces, city clamor, vantage points, and pilgrimage shrines. Remember that Kathmandu is the base city for any kinds of holiday activities that you do in Nepal.

Nowadays, there are two regional international airports outside of the Kathmandu Valley. They are in Pokhara and Butwal. However, these two international airports are not in function fully. Therefore, all the tourists coming to Nepal use the Kathmandu’s Tribhuwan International Airport. It is therefore the gateway to any kinds of holiday activities. Be it the trekking or peak climbing or simply tours, you must travel to Kathmandu to commence the trek.

The most interesting thing about the Kathmandu Valley is that the city vibes is so spiritual. Walking the ancient alleyways or the city center, you can experience the laid back life of people. Most of the travelers who travel in the places to visit in Kathmandu claim that the city provides traditional and warm vibes.

However, you can do lots of other activities as well. There are many amusement parks, sports hubs, climbing spots, theaters, etc. where you can spend quality time with your friends and families. Please note down that traveling in Kathmandu is absolutely safe 24/7 for all.

Now, let’s talk about the things to do in Kathmandu from the touristic point of view.

Day Hiking

As mentioned above, the Kathmandu is surrounded by green lush hills on all sides. Therefore, there are plenty of day hiking routes where you can connect with the local people, flora, and fauna. Interestingly, some of the hiking trails can offer the best view of the mountains from Langtang, Annapurna, Manaslu, and Everest Himalayan range. You can do short 2 hours hike to 6 to 8 hours of hike in the Kathmandu Valley. Major hiking trails of the Kathmandu Valley are the Shivapuri Hike, Jamacho Hike, Chandragiri Hill Hike, Sundarijal Hike, Tarakeshwor Hike, etc. Note down that there are three national parks inside the valley. They are the Shivapuri National Park, the Shivapuri Nagarjun National Park, and the Langtang National Park. Therefore, it is also the best place for bird watching day hike tour.

Heritage Tour

The valley is largely dominated by the ancient palaces, temples, and stupas. These monuments are the national heritages and date back several century’s. You can visit the palaces and temples as part of the heritage tour and these monuments were built in Lichhavi and Malla dynasty period. Therefore, doing the heritage tour in Kathmandu offers the chance to understand the ancient architectural craftsmanship of Nepalese ancestors. It is indeed the best way to know about Nepal and its connection with the spiritual realm. You can connect the heritage tour with the pilgrimage tour too. The biggest and sacred holy temple of the Hindus is here in Kathmandu, the Pashupatinath temple. Similarly, it is also the place where you can find the sacred shrine for Buddhists, Bouddhanath and Swyambunath.

Food Tour

The Kathmandu Valley is largely dominated by the Newari People. Since the city is the capital of Nepal, there are different communities of people living here. Thus, you can get the chance to do amazing food tour where you can enjoy delicacies from different communities. Major food that you can taste in the valley is from the Newari cuisine. Besides Newari food, you can also get chance to enjoy Tibetan food especially in the places around Bouddhanath and Swyambhunath. Quench your thirst of tasting different cuisines by visiting the various authentic restaurants of Kathmandu.
