Cathay Pacific operates a nonstop flight between Hong Kong International Airport and Tribhuvan International Airport, taking roughly 4 hours 30 minutes to 4 hours 45 minutes.

Nepal Airlines also flies the route, though Cathay generally offers more weekly departure slots to choose from.

Hong Kong sits 2 hours 15 minutes ahead of Nepal, so jet lag is barely a factor. Leave Hong Kong in the morning, and you can be settled into a Thamel guesthouse the same afternoon, with a full extra day in hand before your trek briefing.

Nepal Visa for Hong Kong Passport Holders

Hong Kong SAR passport holders get a straightforward visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, and there is no embassy visit required beforehand.

The standard tourist visa comes in three durations: 15 days for USD 30, 30 days for USD 50, and 90 days for USD 125, and all three allow multiple entries!

For a Manaslu package plus a few days in Kathmandu, we generally suggest the 30-day option. Bring a passport valid for at least six months beyond your travel dates, one passport photo, and clean USD cash, since card payments at the immigration counter are not always reliable.

Nepal also offers an online eVisa, and filling it in before you fly can save real time in the arrival queue, especially in October and November.

Best Season and How Demanding the Trek Actually Is

Autumn, from late September through November, and spring, from March through May, remain the strongest windows for the Manaslu Circuit Trek.

Both bring stable weather and clear views of Manaslu (8,163 m) and its surrounding peaks. Winter closes Larkya La Pass (5,106 m) with heavy snow more often than not, so we do not recommend it for a first attempt.

Larkya La makes this a moderately to severely challenging trek. Daily walking runs 5 to 7 hours across most days, with one long summit-style push over the pass itself.

Hong Kong’s own hiking trails, such as the Dragon’s Back or the stair sections of the Peak Trail, make decent training ground if you build up your distance over 6 to 8 weeks before departure.

Permits and the Mandatory Guide Rule

Manaslu sits inside a restricted area, so you cannot trek here on a simple entry stamp.

Three permits are required:

1. Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
2. Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), since the trail exits into Annapurna territory after Larkya La.
3. Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
4. A small Chumnubri Rural Municipality fee is also collected at Jagat.

The RAP is priced by season:

• From September to November, it costs USD 100 per person for the first 7 days, then USD 15 per additional day.
• From December to August, it drops to USD 75 for the first 7 days, then USD 10 per additional day. MCAP and ACAP each cost around USD 30 per person, regardless of season.

No permits can be arranged independently. A registered Nepali agency must apply for all three together, and a licensed guide has to accompany you inside the restricted zone at all times.

ATMs stop working reliably beyond Machha Khola, so withdraw what you need in Kathmandu first. A tip equal to roughly 10 percent of your trek cost, split between guide and porter, is standard practice across Nepal.

The Manaslu Circuit Trek Route in Brief

Our standard itinerary runs 12 days Manaslu Circuit Trek from Kathmandu and back. The trail follows the Budhi Gandaki river from Machha Khola through Jagat and Deng, climbs steadily through Namrung and Lho, and reaches Samagaon (3,530 m) for a built-in acclimatization day.

From there, it pushes to Samdo and Dharamsala before the early crossing of Larkya La Pass, then descends into Bhimtang and Dharapani for the drive back toward Kathmandu.

Trekkers with extra days on hand often extend into the Tsum Valley from Lokpa, a separate restricted region with its own permit and a noticeably different, more monastic feel than the main circuit.

Altitude, Packing, and Staying Connected

Altitude sickness can affect anyone above 2,500 m, regardless of fitness level. Drink water consistently, and tell your guide immediately if a headache, nausea, or unusual fatigue shows up rather than pushing through it.

Confirm your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation before you leave Hong Kong, since standard policies often exclude both.
