Many Taiwanese travelers already know Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp from earlier trips to Nepal. Manaslu is different.

It circles the eighth highest mountain in the world through the Nubri and Tsum valleys, and the government only opened the route to foreign trekkers in 1991.

Fewer crowds, more remote villages, and a genuinely restricted permit system separate it from the treks most Taiwanese travelers try first.

Getting There: Flights and Visa From Taiwan

Expect roughly 15 to 24 hours of total travel time from Taoyuan International Airport to Tribhuvan International in Kathmandu.

Cathay Pacific routes through Hong Kong, Thai Airways and Scoot connect via Bangkok, and Batik Air offers a Kuala Lumpur connection. Compare layover times carefully, since a short one can turn stressful if your first flight runs late!

Taiwanese passport holders can get a visa on arrival at Kathmandu airport. It costs USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, or USD 125 for 90 days, paid in cash at the counter.

Bring a passport valid for at least six months and one passport-sized photo. Because a full Manaslu itinerary with Kathmandu prep days and a buffer before your return flight often runs close to three weeks, the 30-day visa is usually the safer choice.

Permits: Why Manaslu Works Differently Than ABC or EBC

Unlike Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Base Camp, which do not require a licensed guide, Manaslu is a genuinely restricted region.

You will need four permits: the Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP), the Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP), the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit / ACAP (since the route exits through Dharapani into Annapurna territory), and a local Chhumnubri municipality fee.

Moreover, a licensed guide is mandatory throughout, and checkpoints at Jagat verify this before letting anyone continue.

One recent change matters for solo Taiwanese trekkers specifically. For years, the RAP required a minimum of two foreign trekkers on the same application, which meant solo travelers had to find a partner just for paperwork.

However, on March 22, 2026, Nepal’s Department of Immigration removed that two-person minimum. Manaslu Circuit Solo trekkers can now apply individually, though the guide requirement has not changed at all.

Permit costs shift with season. The RAP runs roughly USD 100 to 150 for the first week in peak season (September to November), with a lower rate outside that window.

MCAP and ACAP each cost around NPR 3,000 (about USD 22 to 30), and the municipality fee adds another NPR 1,000.

Your agency (like Everest Trekking Routes ourselves) processes all of this, so plan for at least two full working days in Kathmandu before departure, since permits are not issued on weekends.

The Route: Soti Khola to Larkya La and Back

Most itineraries begin driving from Kathmandu to Machha Khola or Soti Khola, then follow the Budhi Gandaki river through a steep gorge toward the Tibetan-influenced villages of the Nubri valley.

Lho, Samagaon, and Samdo carry visible Buddhist heritage, with mani walls and monasteries lining the trail. Samagaon is where most groups take an acclimatization day, often with a side walk toward Manaslu’s own base camp, before pushing higher.

The Larkya La Pass at 5,106 m is the trek’s hardest single day, usually crossed early in the morning before wind picks up. From there, the trail descends to Bhimthang and continues out through Dharapani, where it briefly overlaps with the Annapurna Circuit before the drive back to Kathmandu.

A full itinerary, including Kathmandu buffer days, typically runs 13 to 17 days. So, dear Taiwanese friends, be prepare for that!

Best Season and What Catches First-Timers Off Guard

Autumn, from September to November, gives the clearest mountain views and lines up well with Taiwan’s own October holiday stretch, though permit fees and lodge demand both rise during that window.

Spring (March to May) brings rhododendron blooms at lower elevations. Winter closes the pass often enough that most agencies avoid scheduling departures then.

Taiwan’s highest peak, Yushan, tops out under 4,000 m, so even experienced Taiwanese hikers should not assume that background fully prepares them for a 5,106 m pass crossing.

Furthermore, phone signal and data become unreliable as you climb higher, so tell family to expect a few quiet days (particularly on the final day in Dharmashala). Also, there are no ATMs beyond the lower villages either, so carry enough Nepali rupees in cash for the full trek.

Travel Insurance: One That Trekkers From Taiwan Often Skip!

Many Taiwanese travelers already carry insurance from shorter regional trips, but those standard policies rarely cover high-altitude trekking above 3,000 m, and almost none include helicopter evacuation.

Larkya La sits above 5,000 m, so a policy that stops at “hiking” or “adventure travel” in general terms will not actually pay out if something goes wrong near the pass. Confirm your policy names high-altitude trekking specifically and includes helicopter rescue, since evacuation from Samagaon or Samdo depends entirely on weather and a helicopter being available that day.
