Manaslu Circuit Trek from Malaysia: A Complete 2026/27 Guide
Manaslu comes up often once Malaysian trekkers start comparing Everest Base Camp and the Annapurna Circuit against something quieter.
A Manaslu Circuit Trek from Malaysia works logistically better than most people expect, with a short flight to Kathmandu and none of the visa complications some other nationalities run into.
This guide covers flights, permits, the guide requirement that sets Manaslu apart from Annapurna, and what a realistic 2026/27 budget looks like.
Flights and Visa: Reaching Kathmandu from Kuala Lumpur
AirAsia X, Malaysia Airlines and Himalaya Airlines all fly direct between Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu. The flight takes roughly 4 hours 45 minutes, shorter than most Malaysian trekkers expect for a Himalayan trip.
Several flights run every week, so fitting a trek around annual leave is usually straightforward!
Malaysian passport holders get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The fee structure is the standard one: USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, and USD 125 for 90 days, paid in cash.
Manaslu itineraries generally run longer than Annapurna or Everest trips once you count the walk-in days, so we recommend the 30-day visa.
Why Manaslu Plays by Different Rules Than Annapurna or Everest?
Manaslu sits inside a restricted area under Nepal’s immigration rules. This changes the planning process compared with Annapurna or Everest.
The trail runs close to the Tibet border for part of its length, and the government controls who enters and how.
You cannot simply book flights and apply for a permit yourself here. A registered trekking agency has to submit your Restricted Area Permit application, and it names your exact route and your guide.
The process is more controlled, though that does not make the trek harder to book. It just shifts who arranges what, and when!
Permits and Guide Rules for a Manaslu Circuit Trek from Malaysia
A Manaslu Circuit trek needs four permits:
- Manaslu Restricted Area Permit (RAP)
- Manaslu Conservation Area Permit (MCAP)
- Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP), since the route finishes inside the Annapurna Conservation Area near Dharapani.
- Chumnubri Rural Municipality Permit (new one, issued at Jagat)
MCAP and ACAP each cost NPR 3,000, roughly USD 23, for foreign nationals. The RAP is priced by season: around USD 100 for the first 7 days between September and November, and USD 75 for the first 7 days from December to August, with a daily fee added after that.
Unlike Annapurna, a licensed guide is a genuine legal requirement here, not just something we recommend. Checkpoints along the restricted section check for one directly!
Nepal dropped the old rule requiring two trekkers to share a single RAP back in March 2026, so solo travelers can now apply on their own. The guide requirement did not change.
Best Season for the Manaslu Circuit?
October to November brings the clearest mountain views and the most stable weather, though RAP fees also sit at their highest during these months.
March, April and May work well too, with rhododendron blooms adding some color lower in the valley.
Winter trekking is technically possible, but Larkya La (aka the Larke Pass), the trek’s high pass at 5,106 m, closes regularly after heavy snow.
We do not recommend planning a Manaslu trip for December through February unless your dates are flexible enough to absorb a weather delay.
How Long the Manalsu Trek Takes?
Most Manaslu Circuit itineraries run 14 to 16 days on the trail. That is longer than a standard Annapurna Circuit, mainly because the approach from Soti Khola takes several extra days before you reach the high country.
Add 2 to 3 days in Kathmandu for arrival, permit processing and a buffer against delays.
There is no shortcut here equivalent to Annapurna’s road-shortened start from Chame. The full walk-in is part of what keeps Manaslu quieter, so we do not recommend trying to compress it.
Manaslu Circuit Trek Cost from Malaysia
Round trip flights between Kuala Lumpur and Kathmandu generally cost USD 350 to USD 650. AirAsia X is often the cheaper option if you book a few months ahead. Add your visa fee on top of that.
A guided Manaslu Circuit package with us typically runs USD 1,300 to USD 2,100. That figure already includes RAP, MCAP, ACAP, your guide, and teahouse accommodation along the route.
Altogether, a realistic total budget from Malaysia lands between roughly USD 1,700 and USD 2,800 for a 16 to 18 day trip. Treat these as planning ranges, since both permit fees and flight prices move with the season.
Money and Connectivity on the Trail
Nepali Rupees are the only currency accepted once you leave Kathmandu. There are no ATMs past Machha Khola, so carry enough cash for the entire trek.
Moreover, mobile signal reaches larger villages like Samagaon, but it disappears for long stretches around Larkya La.
Pack layers for a wide temperature swing, plus a sleeping bag rated well below freezing. Teahouses along the Manaslu route are simpler than those on Annapurna or Everest, particularly at Dharmashala, so do not expect the same range of food or charging options.
What Our Manaslu Circuit Package Includes at ETR?
Every Manaslu Circuit package we run at Everest Trekking Routes includes RAP, MCAP and ACAP processing, a licensed guide, teahouse accommodation, and daily meals on the trail.
Since the restricted area permit legally requires an agency application, we handle that paperwork early, usually 10 to 15 days before your trek starts, so delays on the Malaysian side do not push your dates back.
We also build a buffer day around Larkya La into every itinerary. Weather on that pass is unpredictable enough that a tight schedule without slack causes real problems for trekkers flying back to Kuala Lumpur on a fixed date!
If you are weighing Manaslu against Annapurna or Everest, or you are unsure how far out you need to apply for the restricted area permit, message us on WhatsApp with your travel window. We can tell you honestly what fits your dates before you commit to flights.
