Langtang Valley Trek Full Planning Guide for 2026-27
The Langtang Valley Trek sits just 110 km north of Kathmandu, making it the closest major Himalayan trekking destination from the capital. And yet, a lot of trekkers treat it as the “easier alternative” and show up without much preparation. That is not the right way to think about it!
Langtang National Park, Nepal’s first Himalayan national park established in 1976, spans 1,710 sq km from subtropical forest at 1,000 m all the way to Langtang Lirung at 7,234 m.
The trek reaches Tsergo Ri at 4,985 m, which is above the altitude at which AMS becomes a genuine concern. It demands real physical effort, proper pacing, and at least a basic understanding of what the route involves before you land in Kathmandu.
If you are planning the Langtang Valley Trek in 2026 or 2027, this guide from Everest Trekking Routes covers the route, cost, permits, and practical tips in a format that actually helps you prepare. Let’s get started!
Langtang Valley Trek Itinerary and Route Details
The standard Langtang Valley Trek at Everest Trekking Routes takes 8 days, including arrival and departure.
The trail follows an out-and-back route from Syaphru Bensi (Syabrubesi), following the Langtang Khola river all the way up to Kyanjin Gompa at 3,890 m, with high-altitude hikes above the village on the peak days.
Full Route: Syaphru Bensi > Bamboo > Rimche > Lama Hotel > Ghoda Tabela > Thangshyap > Langtang Village > Mundu > Kyanjin Gompa > Kyanjin Ri / Tsergo Ri > Kyanjin Gompa > Lama Hotel > Syaphru Bensi
The complete route distance from Syaphru Bensi to Kyanjin Gompa is approximately 30 km one way (60 km two-way), and the total trek covers overall distance of 65 to 70 km, depending on the side hikes you include.
And not to forget that you get to see Langtang Village’s before and after the 2015 Nepal Earthquake.
8-Day Langtang Valley Trek: The Most Popular Choice
Here’s what the general Langtang Valley Trek itinerary looks like in most of our Langtang Trek packages:
| Day | Route | Final Altitude | Approx. distance | Approx. Time |
| 1 | Drive Kathmandu to Syabrubesi | 1,984 m | 110 km | 4 to 5 hours |
| 2 | Syabrubesi to Lama Hotel | 3,140 m | 11 km | 6 to 7 hours |
| 3 | Lama Hotel to Mundu | 3,550 m | 13 km | 6 to 7 hours |
| 4 | Mundu to Kyanjin Gompa, Kyanjin Ri Optional Hike | 4,700 m (hike) | 5 km (2 km round-trip for Kyanjin Ri) | 3 to 4 hours (3 hours) |
| 5 | Tsergo Ri Hike, Rest Day | 4,985 m (summit) | 10 km (round-trip) | 7 to 8 hours |
| 6 | Kyanjin Gompa to Lama Hotel | 2,515 m | 18 km | 5 to 6 hours |
| 7 | Lama Hotel to Syanbrubesi | 1,467 m | 11 km | 4 to 5 hours |
| 8 | Drive back to Kathmandu | 1,400 m | 110 km | 4 to 5 hours |
Well, one thing that sets our itinerary apart at ETR is the overnight stop at Mundu (3,550 m) on Day 3 rather than Langtang Village. Why this is because Langtang Village is the more popular stop and fills up fast in the peak season, which often means a noisier night and less availability.
Mundu, just a kilometre further, is quieter, gives you a slightly earlier start to Kyanjin Gompa on Day 4, and because you arrive at Kyanjin before midday, you have a real window for the Kyanjin Ri sunset hike the same afternoon.
Combining Langtang Valley Trek with Other Routes
The Langtang Valley Trek is a strong standalone trip, but the region offers a few extensions worth knowing about:
- Tamang Heritage Trail: It follows the lower Rasuwa valleys and passes through some of the most culturally distinct Tamang villages in the country.
- Adding Gosaikunda to the Langtang route: This is a very popular combination for those with 10 to 12 days and a genuine interest in high-altitude lake trekking. Gosaikunda sits at 4,380 m and is sacred to both Hindu and Buddhist communities.
- Ganja La Pass Trek: This one’s more dedicated for those preferring technical objectives. The trek goes up to 5,130 m, connecting the Langtang and Helambu valleys and is a serious undertaking that requires crampons and experience with glacier terrain.
- A full 17-day Langtang Circuit: This one’s a combination of Tamang Heritage, Langtang Valley, Gosaikunda region, and then to Helambu, which is a unique experience worth trying!
Other customization options include adding hidden gems of the Langtang National Park, like Langshisha Kharka, Morimoto Base Camp, Langtang Lirung Base Camp, Lirung Glacier Viewpoint, etc.
In fact, adventure seekers can even opt for trekking peaks, like the popular Yala Peak and Ghanja La Chuli, aka Naya Khanga. But do note that adding these will directly impact your itinerary and cost too.
Langtang Valley Trek 2026/2027 Cost
The cost of the Langtang Valley Trek depends on your chosen itinerary, group size, and the season. In fact, all packages from Everest Trekking Routes (and other reliable trekking agencies) include a licensed guide, teahouse accommodation, meals on the trail, permits, and airport transfers.
Here is a full breakdown of our current package options (so it becomes easier for you to decide budget-wise):
- Standard Langtang Valley Trek: $550/person
- 5-Day Langtang Trek: $550/person
- 6-Day Langtang Trek: $440/person
- 7-Day Solo Langtang Trek: $480/person
- Langtang Valley Solo Trek: $550/person
- Langtang Gosaikunda Trek: $870/person
- Langtang Ganja La Pass Trek: $1,450/person
- 17-Day Langtang Circuit Trek: $1,360/person
- Langtang Valley Luxury Trek: $1,150/person
Beyond the package cost, make sure you budget separately for: your Nepal tourist visa (USD 30 for 15 days or USD 50 for 30 days), personal expenses on the trail (WiFi, hot showers, charging: roughly NPR 500 to 1,000 per day), and tipping, which is standard practice across Langtang and all Nepal trekking routes at around 10% of your total trek cost.
Permits for the Langtang Valley Trek
The Langtang Valley Trek requires only one main permit, which is the Langtang National Park Entry Permit. It costs NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals and NPR 1,000 for SAARC nationals.
This is the primary document checked at the army checkpoint in Dhunche, before the road takes you to Syaphru Bensi. The good news is that whether you’re an independent trekker or going with a guide, you can get the permit from the army checkpoint in Dhunche itself.
And note that: unlike the Manaslu or Upper Mustang regions, Langtang is not a restricted area, which means the permit process is straightforward and does not require a special agency sponsorship.
Still, going with a trekking agency is highly recommended for safety reasons and proper logistics handling, which our team at Everest Trekking Routes have years of experience on.
You might be perplexed on what to do about the TIMS Card. Currently, it’s not a compulsion to get this, but in case in future the card is legally required, your trekking agency will sort it out for you!
Travel Tips for the Langtang Valley Trek
To make it easy for you, we’ve listed tips based on categories below, and note that these suggestions come directly from our expert guides who have trekked Langtang multiple times:
Choosing the Right Season for Langtang Valley
- Trekking in October and early November offer the most reliable combination of clear skies and mountain views. But Lama Hotel and Kyanjin Gompa receives heavy traffic in this window, so teahouses can fill up fast. So, booking in advance matters more than most trekkers expect.
- Spring from late March through May brings rhododendron bloom in the lower forest zones (Bamboo to Ghoda Tabela) and relatively stable weather above the treeline. This is the second peak season, and trail conditions are generally excellent.
- December trekking in Langtang as well as winter treks here is possible with proper preparation. Below Kyanjin, the trail is manageable. But above Kyanjin, including both Kyanjin Ri and Tsergo Ri, expect snow on the upper sections and temperatures well below zero at night.
- Monsoon (June to September) brings leeches on the lower trail, landslide risk on the Syaphru Bensi road, and limited visibility from Langtang Village upward. While it is not the best month to trek for most trekkers, if you go with trusted guides (like the ones form ETR), it’s still possible!
Difficulty and Preparation Tips
- The Langtang Valley Trek is rated moderate overall, with two genuinely difficult days: the 6 to 7-hour push from Thangshyap to Mundu on Day 3, and the Tsergo Ri summit hike on Day 5. If you can walk uphill continuously for 6 hours with a loaded daypack, you can definitely manage this route!
- Cardiovascular preparation matters the most on the Langtang Valley Trek. The daily uphill walks of 45 minutes to an hour, four to six weeks before the trek, will do more for your Tsergo Ri summit chances than any amount of gym work. Squats and lunges will help specifically with the descent back from Kyanjin to Lama Hotel, which is where knees take the most stress.
- Do not skip the Kyanjin Ri hike on Day 4 even if you feel tired after arriving at Kyanjin. The acclimatization benefit of climbing to 4,700 m and returning to sleep at 3,890 m is real. Your Tsergo Ri summit attempt on Day 5 will be noticeably easier for having done it.
- AMS symptoms (headache, nausea, fatigue beyond what the day’s hiking explains) typically appear above 3,500 m for susceptible trekkers. The acclimatization approach in this itinerary, stopping at Thangshyap before Langtang Village and Mundu before Kyanjin, is deliberate. Follow proper altitude and acclimatization practices and inform your guide immediately if you feel off!
Packing Tips for Langtang Trekking
- Your pack for Langtang should stay at 10 to 12 kg, excluding the daypack, since porters are available on a two-person basis. Do not overload the porter bag with valuables; keep your camera, documents, and medications in your own daypack.
- Crampons are mandatory for Tsergo Ri regardless of season. The upper section above 4,000 m carries ice year-round, and attempting it without traction in the wrong conditions is the most common reason for summit failure. They can be rented in Kyanjin if needed.
- You don’t have to carry a sleeping bag (but you can carry a sleeping liner just in case). Teahouses in Langtang region offer blankets, but be mentally prepared for the temperature at Kyanjin in the evenings as it regularly drops below freezing.
- A universal travel adapter supporting 220-240V and 50 Hz is necessary. Electricity is available via microhydro up to Kyanjin, but charging stations at the higher teahouses get congested. A power bank for the summit days is not optional, it is the backup plan.
Responsible Trekking in Langtang
- Carry a refillable bottle and water purification tablets. The Langtang Khola river is glacial, clean-looking water, but do not drink from it directly. Purification tablets cost almost nothing and eliminate one of the most common causes of mid-trek illness.
- The Tamang community operates every teahouse, guiding service, and porter network along this route. Spending money at local shops and choosing locally-run lodges over those operated by outside contractors is the most direct way to support the community that maintains this trail.
- Mani walls and chortens appear from Syaphru Bensi through to Kyanjin. Always pass them on your left, keeping the wall to your right. Ask before photographing anyone, particularly in the monastery at Kyanjin.
Without a doubt, the Langtang Valley Trek from Kathmandu is one of the most complete Himalayan experiences available within a short drive of the capital.
If done right, it delivers high-altitude summits, genuine Tamang cultural interaction, glacier and mountain views (Langtang plus Jugal Himal range) you can see with your own eyes, and a mountain landscape that most Himalayan trekking regions cannot match at this accessibility level.
At Everest Trekking Routes, our team is all ready to handle every logistics detail from the moment you land. All you have to do is contact us for itinerary questions, group pricing, and any customisation before you book any of our Langtang trek package!
