Everest Trek Cost From Hong Kong 2026/2027
Hong Kong trekkers ask us the same question every season: what does an Everest trek cost from Hong Kong, once every flight, permit, and trail expense is added up?
The short answer is that a standard 12 to 14 day Everest Base Camp trek runs somewhere between USD 1,300 and USD 2,500 per person, depending on your season and comfort level. The longer answer, which actually helps you plan, needs a proper breakdown.
Hong Kong sits closer to Kathmandu than most Western departure points, and that shapes the budget in your favor! There is no need to route through Delhi or Bangkok on a long layover.
Below, we walk through every cost category, from the moment you leave Hong Kong International Airport to the day you land back in Kathmandu with Everest behind you.
Cost of Flights From Hong Kong to Kathmandu
Cathay Pacific and Nepal Airlines both fly nonstop between Hong Kong and Kathmandu, and the route takes around 5 hours in the air. That single fact removes a whole layer of cost and fatigue compared with flying in from Europe or North America.
Round-trip fares typically fall between USD 500 and USD 700, though shoulder-season deals sometimes dip lower.
Prices climb during Nepal’s autumn peak season, September through November, when trekking demand across the region is highest.
Booking six to eight weeks ahead usually locks in a fairer fare, especially if your travel dates line up with a Hong Kong public holiday week.
Nepal Visa Fees for Hong Kong Passport Holders
Hong Kong passport holders need a visa to enter Nepal, and the simplest route is a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. The fee structure is straightforward:
- 15 days: USD 30
- 30 days: USD 50
- 90 days: USD 125
You can pay this in cash, and Hong Kong dollars are accepted at the counter alongside US dollars.
For a standard Everest itinerary with a few buffer days in Kathmandu, the 30-day visa gives you comfortable room without paying for time you will not use!
Permits Required for the Everest Region
Every trekker heading toward Everest Base Camp needs two permits, and neither is optional. The first is the Sagarmatha National Park entry permit, priced at NPR 3,000 for foreign nationals.
The second is the Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality permit, also NPR 3,000. Together, that comes to roughly USD 45 at current exchange rates.
A TIMS card is no longer required for the Everest region specifically, since the rural municipality permit replaced it.
We at Everest Trekking Routes handle both permits as part of every package we run, so you will not need to queue at counters in Kathmandu or Lukla to sort out the paperwork yourself!
Guides and Their Cost on the Everest Trek
We recommend trekking with a licensed local guide, and every one of our Everest packages includes one!
A guide adds real value on this route: route knowledge, altitude monitoring, and a direct line to help if weather or health issues disrupt your plan.
Guide support is part of our service and safety standard, not a separate line item you need to research or arrange on your own.
But if you plan to trek independently, expect to pay around USD 30 to USD 50 per day for a guide’s services.
And if you’re going to add a porter for two who carries about 20-22 kg of the weight, they will cost you about USD 20 to USD 35 per day.
The Kathmandu to Lukla Flight Cost
This short mountain flight is where your trek genuinely begins, and it is one of the bigger single costs on the trip.
One-way fares run between USD 175 and USD 240, depending on the season and whether the route departs from Kathmandu or Manthali Airport in Ramechhap.
During the spring and autumn peak seasons, congestion at Kathmandu’s domestic terminal pushes Lukla flights out to Ramechhap instead, adding a 4 to 5 hour night drive before your flight window.
It sounds inconvenient on paper, but for Hong Kong trekkers already adjusting to a new time zone, an early departure rarely changes much. We build the transfer into the itinerary either way, so you show up and follow the plan!
What a Package Price Actually Covers?
Most trekking agencies, including ours at Everest Trekking Routes, price the Everest Base Camp trek as an all-inclusive package once you reach Kathmandu.
A typical inclusion list covers:
- Kathmandu to Lukla flights, both directions
- Sagarmatha National Park and Khumbu Pasang Lhamu permits
- A licensed guide and porter support
- Teahouse accommodation along the trail
- Three meals a day while trekking
Bundled into a package, these figures become part of one fixed number, which is easier to budget against from Hong Kong dollars before you ever land in Nepal.
Extra Costs to Budget on the Trail
Beyond the package price, plan for out-of-pocket spending on the trail itself.
Wi-Fi, device charging, hot showers, and snacks all cost more as you climb higher, since everything above Namche Bazaar arrives by porter or yak.
Budget roughly USD 15 to 25 a day for these extras, plus USD 100 to 180 for tips at the end of the trek, split between your guide and porter.
Best Time to Trek and How It Affects Cost
Autumn (September to November) and spring (March to May) offer the clearest mountain views and the most stable weather, which is exactly why flights, permits, and lodge beds all cost more during those months.
Trekking in the shoulder weeks just before or after peak season can trim your budget without a major trade-off in visibility.
Winter drops both prices and crowds further, though cold nights above 4,000 m demand a warmer gear list. For a first Everest trip from Hong Kong, autumn remains the safest recommendation, particularly since it avoids Nepal’s summer monsoon entirely.
