Singapore to Nepal: Flying from Changi to Kathmandu

Singapore Airlines runs a daily nonstop service between Changi and Tribhuvan International Airport, and the flight takes just under five hours.

Garuda Indonesia also serves the route, usually with a short stop in Jakarta or Denpasar. Nepal sits only about two hours behind Singapore, so jet lag barely factors in!

Because Singapore Airlines’ flight departs late morning and lands in the early afternoon, most trekkers reach their Thamel guesthouse with enough daylight left for a proper meal and an early night.

That matters, since your trek briefing and gear check usually happen the next morning, before Lukla logistics take over.

The Lukla Flight Isn’t Always From Kathmandu

This is the part that surprises Singaporean trekkers most, and few guides explain it clearly.

During peak trekking season, roughly March to May and September to November, Kathmandu doesn’t handle Lukla departures at all.

Nepal’s Civil Aviation Authority instead diverts flights to Manthali Airport in Ramechhap, a district about four to five hours’ drive from the capital.

Practically, this means a 1 or 2 am wake-up call, a long night drive on hill roads, and then a short 20-minute flight into Lukla once the weather window opens.

It sounds gruelling on paper. However, it actually runs more reliably than the old Kathmandu route, since Ramechhap sits at a lower altitude with clearer morning skies.

Visa Rules for Singapore Passport Holders

Getting into Nepal is refreshingly simple. Singaporean citizens can collect a tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, and the eVisa option works too if you would rather skip the queue.

Three durations are available: 15 days for USD 30, 30 days for USD 50, and 90 days for USD 125.

For a standard 12 to 14 day Everest Base Camp itinerary with a few extra days in Kathmandu, the 30-day visa covers you comfortably.

But you must bring a passport valid for six months beyond your travel dates, one passport photo, and clean USD notes, since card payments at the immigration counter aren’t always accepted.

Permits for the Everest Base Camp Trek

Unlike Upper Mustang or Manaslu, the Everest region isn’t a restricted area, so the paperwork stays fairly light.

Two permits are required:

1. The Sagarmatha National Park Entry Permit costs NPR 3,000.
2. Khumbu Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipality Permit costs another NPR 3,000, so budget around NPR 6,000, or roughly USD 45, in total.

Notably, Khumbu checkpoints no longer issue TIMS cards. The municipality permit above has fully replaced it.

Best Season, Difficulty and What Your Days Look Like?

Autumn, from late September through November, and spring, from March through May, bring the clearest peaks and the most stable trail conditions.

Expect five to seven hours of walking most days, with one demanding push toward Kala Patthar for sunrise.

Singapore’s own trails, MacRitchie or Bukit Timah, build decent leg fitness. Still, nothing at sea level really prepares your lungs for the altitude past Namche Bazaar.

Confirm your travel insurance covers high-altitude trekking and helicopter evacuation before leaving Singapore, since standard policies often exclude both.

Pack a proper down jacket, a sleeping bag rated to at least minus 15 degrees Celsius, and boots that are already broken in.

Singapore’s humid trails rarely call for gear this heavy, so most trekkers rent or buy locally in Kathmandu instead. Mobile signal also thins out fast past Namche and disappears near Kala Patthar, so download offline maps before you leave the city.
