10 and 12 days: For Limited Leave
Our standard 12-day trek costs USD 1,390 (about HKD 10,900).
You fly from Kathmandu to Lukla and back, with 2 acclimatization days at Namche Bazaar and Dingboche. It suits first-timers with average fitness.
The 10-day trek costs USD 1,290 (about HKD 10,110).
It follows the same route with no rest days. Because the climb is faster, we suggest it only for strong hikers who already tackle Lantau Peak or the MacLehose Trail!
Our Budget Everest Base Camp Trek costs USD 1390 (about HKD 10,900) and covers flights, permits, a guide and a porter. Meals and lodging are extra.
Food runs about USD 35 to 50 a day and a bed USD 5 to 15 a night, so the total can end up close to the standard package.
13 and 14 days: For a Gentler Pace
The 14-day trek costs USD 1,430 (about HKD 11,210).
It is our most relaxed schedule on the standard route, with more time to adjust at each stage. It works well for older trekkers and anyone nervous about altitude.
On the other hand, our 13-day trek by road costs USD 1,340 (about HKD 10,510).
You drive from Kathmandu to Phaplu and on to Surke, walk to Phakding, and fly back from Lukla. This keeps a possible flight delay away from the start of your trip. A porter is an optional extra here.
Phaplu and Salleri: For skipping the Lukla flight
The Phaplu to EBC Trek costs USD 1,190 (about HKD 9,330) over 17 days.
You drive to Phaplu in 8 to 9 hours, then walk 4 to 5 days through Solu villages before joining the main trail at Phakding. You also return by road. The slow start gives your body extra time to adjust, so it suits trekkers with 3 weeks to spare.
Likewise, the Salleri to EBC Trek costs USD 1,450 (about HKD 11,370) over 16 days. It uses a similar low-altitude approach, and you fly home from Lukla!
What Our Packages Include at ETR?
Every package from Everest Trekking Routes includes airport pickup, both trekking permits (Sagarmatha National Park and Pasang Lhamu Rural Municipal, ity) and a licensed English-speaking guide.
Our team shall handle the permit paperwork for you. We recommend trekking with a guide because they manage logistics, set a safe pace and carry a first aid kit, so we include one in every package!
Apart from the budget trek, each package also covers 2 nights in a 3-star Kathmandu hotel, tea house room,s and all trail meals.
However, you pay separately for Kathmandu meals, drinks, hot showers, device charging, personal gear, tips, and travel insurance.
Flights, Visa and Best Season from Hong Kong
Direct flights from Hong Kong to Kathmandu take about 5 hours, and Cathay Pacific and Nepal Airlines both fly the route.
Hong Kong passport holders can get a visa on arrival for USD 30 (15 days) or USD 50 (30 days). Bring cash, a passport valid for 6 months and a passport photo. Choose the 30-day visa for any itinerary beyond 2 weeks (applies to other regions besides Everest too)!
Talking about the best time, well, Spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) bring the clearest skies. Easter and Labour Day both fall in the spring window, which helps with leave planning for all Hong Kong travellers!
Still, book 4 to 6 months ahead! In these months, Lukla flights often leave from Manthali Airport, a 3 to 4 hour drive from Kathmandu. Weather can delay them, so keep 1 spare day before your flight home.
How Difficult is The Trek for Hong Kong Hikers?
Tai Mo Shan, Hong Kong’s highest point, stands at 957 m. Everest Base Camp sits at 5,364 m, and Kala Patthar reaches 5,545 m. That’s a difference of more than 4,000 meters in altitude!
The trail is well trodden, so altitude is the real challenge rather than steep ground. Expect 6 to 7 hours of walking a day. Headaches, nausea or poor sleep above 3,500 m are early altitude warnings, so tell your guide straight away!
Train for at least a month with stair climbs on Lantau Peak or long sections of the MacLehose Trail. On the EBC trail when in Nepal, drink plenty of water, eat full meals and follow your guide’s pace. Nights can drop to -5°C, so pack layers!
Buy travel insurance in Hong Kong before you fly (not in Nepal). It must cover trekking above 5,000 m and helicopter rescue. Leave a copy with our Kathmandu office.
Food, Wi-Fi and Lodging on the Trail
Tea houses serve dal bhat, noodles, soups and eggs, and we can arrange vegetarian meals if you tell us in advance.
Bring purification tablets, since boiled water costs extra. Wi-Fi is free up to Namche Bazaar and costs around NPR 1,000 beyond it, although the NTC and Ncell mobile networks cover most of the route. And device charging? It costs about NPR 200 to 500!
Is EBC Trek Worth the HKD Cost?
At HKD 7,680 to 11,370, you are not paying Hong Kong prices for a Hong Kong experience. You get 2 to 3 weeks with a licensed guide, both permits sorted, and a support system built for altitude, not just scenery.
Compare that to what a guided trek anywhere else in the Himalayas costs, and the value holds up!
So, is it worth it? We would definitely say yes, especially if this is your first time above 5,000 m. What you are really paying for is safety margin, and that is not something to trim on!
