Dashain Festival in Nepal: A Day by Day Guide for Travelers

If you happen to be in Nepal in October, you will notice something odd about the streets. They are quieter than usual, then suddenly packed with families, kites, and new clothes.

That shift is Dashain, and once you know what is actually happening, the whole country starts to make a lot more sense!

Dashain is Nepal’s longest and most important festival. It runs for 15 days and honors the goddess Durga’s victory over the demon Mahishasura, a story of good defeating evil that shapes almost everything you see during this period.

In 2026, it begins on October 11 with Ghatasthapana and closes on October 25 with Kojagrat Purnima. The main day, Vijaya Dashami, falls on October 21.

For a foreign traveler, Dashain is not a festival you watch from the sidelines. Families genuinely welcome outsiders into their tika lines, their card games, and their feasts.

How is Dashain Celebrated? 2026 Day by Day Guide

Dashain is not one big event. It is a sequence of smaller rituals, each with its own name and purpose, building toward the tenth day.

Ghatasthapana (Day 1, October 11)

Families set up a Kalash, a small pot filled with holy water, in a corner of the house. Barley seeds get sown in sand around it.

Over the next nine days, someone waters that patch daily in a dark room, and it grows into jamara, the pale yellow shoots used later in the tika ritual.

Phulpati (Day 7, October 17)

Sacred flowers, plants, and banana stalks travel from Gorkha to Kathmandu’s Hanuman Dhoka in a formal procession.

This day traditionally marks the point where the festival’s energy visibly picks up across the country.

Maha Ashtami (Day 8, October 18)

Temples dedicated to Durga get busy from early morning!

This is one of the two main days for animal sacrifice, alongside Maha Navami, and it can be intense to witness if you are not prepared for it.

Maha Navami (Day 9, October 19)

The Taleju Temple in Kathmandu Durbar Square, normally closed to the public, opens for this one day only.

Large scale sacrifices happen at Hanuman Dhoka, watched by officials and visitors alike. This is also the day mechanics, drivers, and craftspeople worship their tools and vehicles as part of Vishwakarma Puja.

Vijaya Dashami (Day 10, October 21)

This is the day everyone plans around. Elders apply tika, a mix of rice, yogurt, and red vermilion, on the foreheads of younger family members, along with jamara tucked behind the ear.

It comes with a blessing and, often, a small amount of money. Families that have been apart all year make a point of gathering for this alone.

Final Days, Up to Kojagrat Purnima (October 25)

For five more days, relatives visit each other’s homes for tika.

The festival closes on the full moon, when tradition holds that the goddess Laxmi rewards anyone who stays awake through the night.

What Dashain Actually Looks and Feels Like?

Kites take over Kathmandu’s sky for weeks before Tika day, with families competing from rooftops for the best angle on the wind.

In villages and smaller towns, communities build tall bamboo swings called ping, and getting on one, even as an adult, is completely normal and encouraged!

Card games run for days on end inside almost every household, usually with small amounts of money changing hands and a lot of noise.

Markets fill up with new clothes and gifts in the two weeks before Tika, since wearing something new is part of how the festival is marked.

Food is where Dashain shows off. Expect khasi ko masu (goat curry), sel roti (a ring shaped rice bread), and generous servings of meat, since eating well is considered part of the celebration itself.

Practical Things to Know Before You Travel

Government offices, banks, and many local shops close for several days around Phulpati through Tika, roughly October 17 to 21 in 2026.

Tourist areas in Kathmandu and Pokhara stay more functional than the rest of the country, but carry enough cash regardless, since card machines and ATMs can be unreliable when demand spikes.

Domestic flights and long distance buses sell out well ahead of the festival, since much of the country is traveling home at the same time. If your trip includes a Lukla flight or any internal transfer around mid to late October, book that early rather than assuming space will be available.

Guides and porters are usually still working during Dashain, though many will want to spend Tika day itself with their own families if their route allows for it.

Dashain in the Trekking Regions of Nepal

October sits right in the middle of Nepal’s best trekking window, so Dashain and peak trekking season overlap almost completely.

On the Annapurna Base Camp trek, you will pass through Gurung villages where locals celebrate Dashain with the same intensity as in Kathmandu, and families will often happily put tika on passing trekkers who show genuine interest.

Along the Langtang Valley trek, Tamang communities mark the festival with their own regional touches, and the trail itself gets noticeably quieter around Tika day as porters and lodge owners take time with family.

On the Manaslu Circuit trek, villages in the lower Budhi Gandaki valley put up swings and fly kites just like anywhere else in Nepal, giving trekkers a rare, unscripted look at rural Dashain away from the city crowds.

None of this closes the trails. Teahouses stay open, and most guides genuinely enjoy explaining the rituals as you pass through. If your trekking dates land inside the festival window, treat it as a bonus rather than a complication.
