Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary: 7, 10, 12, 15, and 20-Day Routes

Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary: 7, 10, 12, 15, and 20-Day Routes
29/Jun/2026

Choosing your Annapurna Circuit Trek length comes down to one central question: how much time do you actually have?

Some trekkers get two full weeks. Others have exactly 10 days away from work and want to know if that’s enough. Both routes work. However, they’re genuinely different treks in terms of pacing, acclimatization, and how much you enjoy the experience.

A 7-day version moves extremely fast. It skips most acclimatization entirely. A 10-day itinerary is compressed but realistic for fit trekkers. A 15-day route, which we recommend at Everest Trekking Routes, builds in proper rest days. This significantly lowers your altitude sickness risk.

And if you have time, a 20-day extended version lets you add the entire Annapurna Base Camp Trek section, turning this into a complete Himalayan immersion.

This guide breaks down all five itinerary options day by day. We compare them side by side and help you choose based on your fitness, experience, and available time.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Route Overview

Every Annapurna Circuit itinerary follows the same core trail. The route winds through Gurung villages and rhododendron forests. Eventually, it opens into dramatic mountain panoramas around Manang and beyond.

The standard route begins with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760-1,100 m). From here the trek continues through Chame, Pisang, Ngawal and Manang before climbing up to the Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), the highlight of the trek.

After crossing Manang and reaching Mustang, you descend to Muktinath and from there continue to Jomsom, Tatopani and Ghorepani. Many trekkers also make the climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m) for sunrise views. The trek ends with a transfer back to Kathmandu or Pokhara.

Total trekking distance will be 160-190 km depending on your itinerary. High elevation, remote sections, and serious altitude gain make the difficulty rating “Difficult”. The core is Thorong La. But it is also one of the most rewarding of the Himalayan crossings.

7-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

This is the absolute minimum to reach Thorong La Pass and return:

  1. Drive from Kathmandu to Chame (2,760 m), 8-9 hours
  2. Trek from Chame to Pisang (3,300 m), 5-6 hours
  3. Trek from Pisang to Manang (3,500 m), 5-6 hours
  4. Acclimatization day at Manang
  5. Trek from Manang to Thorong Phedi (4,600 m), 5-6 hours
  6. Trek to Muktinath via Thorong La Pass (5,416 m), 7-8 hours
  7. Drive from Muktinath to Pokhara, 7-8 hours

By Day 5, you’re sleeping at 4,600 m with only one acclimatization day behind you. Altitude sickness symptoms are common at this pace. The Thorong La crossing happens when your body has had minimal adjustment time.

We only recommend this if you’ve already completed the Everest Base Camp Trek, Everest Three Pass Trek, Everest Gokyo Lake Trek, or Everest Cho La Pass Trek, and know exactly how your body responds to altitude above 4,500 m.

10-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

This is a fast-paced option for strong trekkers with previous altitude experience:

  1. Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760 m), 7-8 hours
  2. Drive to Chame (2,670 m), 5 hours
  3. Trek to Pisang (3,230 m), 5 hours
  4. Trek to Manang (3,450 m), 5 hours
  5. Rest day in Manang for acclimatization
  6. Trek to Yak Kharka (4,110 m), 4 hours
  7. Trek to Thorong High Camp (4,600 m), 4 hours
  8. Cross Thorong La (5,416 m) and reach Muktinath (3,800 m), 7 hours
  9. Drive to Pokhara by local bus, 10 hours
  10. Drive to Kathmandu by tourist bus, 7-8 hours

You get one solid acclimatization day in Manang. However, the Ghorepani and Poon Hill section is missing entirely. The pass crossing still happens without extensive rest. This works for intermediate trekkers, but demands careful pacing throughout.

12-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary

This version includes the Ghorepani section and Jomsom drive:

  1. Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar (760 m), 5-6 hours
  2. Drive from Besisahar to Chame (2,650 m), 5-6 hours
  3. Trek from Chame to Pisang (3,250 m), 4-5 hours
  4. Trek from Pisang to Ngawal (3,650 m), 5-6 hours
  5. Trek to Manang (3,519 m), 5-6 hours
  6. Acclimatization in Manang Trek from Manang to Yak Kharka (4,018 m), 4 hours
  7. Trek from Yak Kharka to Thorong Phedi (4,450 m), 4-5 hours
  8. Trek from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath via Thorong La (5,416 m), 7-8 hours
  9. Trek from Muktinath to Jomsom, drive to Tatopani (1,190 m), 7-8 hours
  10. Drive from Tatopani to Pokhara (810 m), 5 hours
  11. Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu

You get Manang’s acclimatization benefits and the full Thorong La experience. The 12-day option balances challenge with realistic scheduling for most trekkers.

15-Day Annapurna Circuit Trek Itinerary [Recommended]

This is what we recommend at Everest Trekking Routes for most trekkers:

  • Drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar via Jagat (1,100 m), 7-8 hours
  • Trek from Jagat to Dharapani (1,950 m), 5-6 hours
  • Trek from Dharapani to Chame (2,650 m), 5-6 hours
  • Trek from Chame to Pisang (3,250 m), 4-5 hours
  • Trek from Pisang to Ngawal (3,650 m), 5-6 hours
  • Trek to Manang (3,519 m), 5-6 hours
  • Acclimatization in Manang
  • Trek to Yak Kharka (4,200 m), 6-7 hours
  • Trek to Thorong Phedi or High Camp (4,800 m), 5-6 hours
  • Trek from Thorong Phedi to Muktinath via Thorong La (5,416 m), 8-9 hours
  • Trek from Muktinath to Kagbeni (2,800 m), 4 hours
  • Trek to Tatopani (1,120 m), 4-hour drive
  • Trek to Ghorepani (2,860 m), 8 hours
  • Climb to Poon Hill (3,210 m) and trek to Nayapul, 6 hours,
  • Drive to Pokhara, 2 hours
  • Drive from Pokhara to Kathmandu, 8-9 hours

Why 15 Days Work Best?

The rest day in Manang is crucial. It gives your body time to adapt before pushing higher. On Day 10, when you cross Thorong La, your acclimatization is better, your legs are stronger, and your altitude sickness risk is lower.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek section at the end adds proper context. Sunrise from Poon Hill is genuinely worth the early start. Most trekkers report feeling significantly more confident on the pass crossing when they’ve built in adequate rest beforehand.

We especially recommend this itinerary if this is your first serious high-altitude trek.

20-Day Annapurna Circuit With Annapurna Base Camp

If you have extended time, the 20-day version adds the complete Annapurna Base Camp Trek section after Ghorepani.

Days 1-13 follow the standard 15-day route above. From Day 14 onward, instead of heading to Nayapul, you continue deeper into the sanctuary.

Days 14-22 cover Poon Hill, the ascent to Annapurna Base Camp (4,130 m), descent through Sinuwa, and return to Pokhara and Kathmandu.

This creates a comprehensive high-altitude experience. You see the circuit’s panoramas and the sanctuary views within one trip. However, logistics are complex and this requires advance planning.

If you prefer the sanctuary experience standalone, we offer a 5-day short Annapurna Base Camp Trek and a standard 7-day Annapurna Base Camp Trek focusing purely on the sanctuary without the circuit.

Solo and Luxury Itinerary Options

Solo Annapurna Circuit Trek

Our solo itinerary follows the standard 15-day pacing. You trek with a government-licensed guide who handles all logistics. This gives independence with proper safety and support throughout.

Luxury Options

If comfort matters, our Luxury Annapurna Circuit Trek follows a 14-day pacing with better teahouses, private rooms, and higher-quality meals. The mountains don’t change. Your recovery between days does.

Similarly, we offer a Luxury Annapurna Base Camp Trek for the sanctuary route, a Luxury Everest Base Camp Trek for Everest region trekkers, a Luxury Manaslu Circuit Trek for the Manaslu route, and a Luxury Langtang Valley Trek for those preferring the Langtang region. Comfort upgrades are available across all major routes.

Comparing the Itineraries: Which is Right For You?

Choose 7 days if you’ve done the 10-day Everest Base Camp Trek or a similar challenging high-altitude trek, your fitness is advanced and you’re comfortable with the risk of high altitude.

If you have some altitude experience, are fit and prepared, and want faster pacing but don’t want to spend three full weeks in the mountains, choose 10 days.

Choose 12 days if this is your second high-altitude trek, you want one solid acclimatization day, and you value the balance between challenge and safety.

Pick 15 days if this is your first serious high-altitude trek, you prefer safety margins over speed, and you want time to actually experience the trek rather than just endure it.

Choose 20 days if you want the complete Annapurna Base Camp Trek section added, you’re interested in deep cultural and geographical exploration, and you have the time for full Himalayan immersion.

Annapurna Circuit Trek Route Highlights That You Simply Can’t Miss

  • Manang (3,519 m): This high-altitude village is where Tibetan and Nepali cultures blend. Spend your acclimatization day exploring local monasteries. The views of the Annapurna range from here are genuinely impressive.
  • Thorong La Pass (5,416 m): This is the trek’s crown. By this point, you’ve climbed from 760 m to 5,416 m. The prayer flags at the pass are a real moment. Your body knows what you’ve accomplished.
  • Poon Hill (3,210 m): The sunrise here is genuinely worth the early wake-up. The light hits Annapurna South and Machhapuchhre with perfect clarity. Photography from here is exceptional.
  • Ghorepani: This Gurung village sits at the crossroads of multiple routes. If you’re considering the standalone Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek as a shorter introduction, this section previews what that experience offers. However, reaching it via the full circuit adds much more context.

Altitude and Acclimatization in Annapurna Circuit Trek

You’re climbing from 760 m to 5,416 m in roughly 10 trekking days. This is serious altitude gain. Altitude sickness can affect anyone regardless of fitness. However, proper pacing and acclimatization dramatically reduce risk.

The 15-day itinerary builds in sufficient rest. The 7-day version does not. Your guide will monitor you throughout. Do not push through serious altitude sickness symptoms. Rest and descend if needed.

Factors Affecting Your Itinerary Choice

Other Annapurna Region Options

If the full circuit doesn’t fit your schedule, consider these alternatives.

The Annapurna Base Camp Trek reaches 4,130 m in roughly 7 days. You get the sanctuary views without the full circuit.

The Ghorepani Poon Hill Trek is a lighter introduction reaching 3,210 m in just 4 days. For cultural depth and remote exploration, the Annapurna Tilicho Lake Trek and Nar Phu Valley Trek both stand out.

If you want to combine circuits, the Manaslu Annapurna Circuit Trek connects both major routes. The Manaslu Circuit Trek itself is a popular alternative for those wanting something more remote, with a Short Manaslu Trek and Manaslu Tsum Valley Trek available as variants.

Post-Trek Opportunities

After finishing the circuit in Pokhara, Nepal offers much more!

For completely different landscapes, the Upper Mustang Trek offers Tibetan desert terrain, or you can explore it faster via the Upper Mustang Jeep Tour. And for true remote adventure, the Kanchenjunga Base Camp Trek and Kanchenjunga Circuit Trek reach Nepal’s far eastern corner.

For peak climbing additions, Island Peak, Lobuche Peak, Mera Peak, Pokalde Peak, and Yala Peak all work well as post-circuit additions.

On the other hand, for aerial perspectives, the Annapurna Base Camp Helicopter Tour gives you the sanctuary from above. Next time if you are heading to Everest region you can combine trekking and flying with Everest Base Camp Trek with Helicopter Return.

At Everest Trekking Routes, we help you plan all of these extensions. You don’t need to rush your Nepal visit.
