Annapurna Circuit Trek From Thailand: A Complete Guide

A direct flight from Bangkok lands you in Kathmandu in about three and a half hours. That makes the Annapurna Circuit Trek from Thailand far more reachable than most Thai travelers assume!

There is no long layover to plan around. There is no complicated visa paperwork to chase before departure either.

That combination puts the Annapurna Circuit within easy reach of Thai trekkers who already know Everest Base Camp or Poon Hill but have not looked closely at the longer, higher route around the Annapurna massif.

It circles one of the world’s ten highest mountains through Gurung and Manangi villages. The trail climbs above 5,000 m at Thorong La Pass, then drops into the dry, Tibetan-influenced Kali Gandaki valley on the other side.

Getting to Nepal: Visa and Flights from Thailand

If you are travelling on an ordinary Thai passport, you will pay the same tourist visa on arrival fee as most other nationalities: USD 30 for 15 days, USD 50 for 30 days, or USD 125 for 90 days, payable in cash at Tribhuvan International Airport.

You still need a passport valid for at least six months and one passport photo for the arrival form.

Flights are direct. Thai Airways, Nepal Airlines and Himalaya Airlines all fly nonstop between Bangkok and Kathmandu (Thai Lion Air does not operate this route).

Expect somewhere between 13 and 16 departures a week between the three airlines, with a flight time of 3 hours 20 minutes to 3 hours 30 minutes.

A full Annapurna Circuit itinerary with Kathmandu buffer days often runs two and a half to three weeks, which is 17 to 21 days.

That fits comfortably inside the 30-day tourist visa (USD 50), so you there’s no need to pay for the 90-day visa unless you are planning extra time in Nepal beyond the trek itself.

Permits Required for Thai Nationals: ACAP and TIMS

Every foreign trekker (including Thai nationals) needs two documents before setting out:

1. The Annapurna Conservation Area Permit, or ACAP, costs NPR 3,000, roughly USD 23.
2. The TIMS card (which remains optional) adds NPR 2,000, around USD 15.

Together, the total lands near NPR 5,000, about USD 38 per trekker.

The Route: What an Annapurna Circuit Itinerary Actually Looks Like?

Most itineraries start with a drive from Kathmandu to Besisahar at 760 m. From there, the road continues toward Chame at 2,670 m, since a motorable road now covers much of the lower Marsyangdi valley.

From Chame, the trail becomes proper walking country through Pisang and into Manang at 3,519 m. Nearly every itinerary builds in two acclimatization nights here.

Beyond Manang, the trail climbs steadily through Yak Kharka and Thorong Phedi before the crossing itself.

Thorong La sits at 5,416 m. You need to start the climb before dawn to beat the wind that picks up by mid-morning. The descent drops sharply into Muktinath at 3,760 m, a pilgrimage site sacred to both Hindus and Buddhists.

From there, the trail continues down the Kali Gandaki gorge toward Jomsom, before the drive back to Pokhara.

A standard itinerary runs 12 to 16 days on the trail, plus a couple of days in Kathmandu for permits and gear checks.

Trekkers with more time often extend the walking sections around Besisahar and Chame instead of driving them. This spreads out the altitude gain and makes for a gentler start!

Difficulty and Altitude: What Thai Trekkers Should Know

Thailand’s highest point, Doi Inthanon, tops out at 2,565 m. Thorong La sits more than twice that high.

No amount of hiking experience in Thailand fully prepares you for what a 5,416 m crossing feels like. This is not a technical climb, but the altitude is the real challenge.

Above 3,000 m, the standard advice is to gain no more than 300 to 500 m of sleeping altitude per day.

Moreover, treat the two nights in Manang as non-negotiable, not optional. Watch for headache, nausea and unusual fatigue.

Most importantly, tell your guide immediately if symptoms appear rather than pushing through them.

Best Time to Trek the Annapurna Circuit for Thailand Trekkers

Autumn, from September to November, gives the clearest mountain views and the most stable weather. This is why it draws the largest crowds.

Likewise, Spring, from March to May, brings rhododendron blooms at the lower elevations and slightly quieter trails.

Monsoon season, June to August, raises landslide risk on the lower road sections around Besisahar, even though the high pass itself stays dry.

And winter closes Thorong La often enough that most agencies avoid scheduling departures between December and February.

Budget roughly USD 700 to 1,400 for the trekking portion alone if you’re going independently and not paying trekking agency a fee.

However, note that the exact figure depends on group size, guide arrangements and season, on top of permits and international flights.

Teahouses line the Annapurna Circuit route and serve simple rooms with shared bathrooms lower down, thinning out to more basic setups near Thorong Phedi and Thorong High Camp.

Dal bhat is the reliable staple at every altitude. Wifi is available in most villages for a small daily fee, though signal becomes patchy above Manang.

Moreover, there are no ATMs beyond Chame, so carry enough Nepali rupees in cash to cover the entire trek.

Packing for Annapurna Circuit Trek 

Thailand does not really prepare you for the temperature swing on this Annapurna Circuit route.

Days in Besisahar and the lower valley stay warm. On the other hand, nights at Manang and Thorong Phedi drop well below freezing for most of the trekking season.

So, pack in layers rather than one heavy jacket! A moisture-wicking base layer, a warm mid layer, and a windproof outer shell cover most conditions.

Add a sleeping bag rated to at least minus 15 degrees Celsius, since teahouse rooms are not heated.

Furthermore, sturdy broken-in boots, sunglasses rated for snow glare, and a headlamp for the pre-dawn Thorong La start round out the packing list!

Travel Insurance: Please Check Twice!

Standard travel insurance from Thailand rarely covers trekking above 3,000 m or helicopter evacuation.

Thorong La sits well above that threshold at 5,416 m. So, confirm your policy specifically names high-altitude trekking and includes rescue coverage before you leave Thailand. Gaps are far harder to fix once you are already on the trail!
