Cathay Pacific runs direct flights between Hong Kong and Kathmandu, with a flight time of around 5 hours.

Nepal Airlines also flies the route, though less frequently. There is no need to transit through Delhi, Bangkok, or Kuala Lumpur, which shortens the journey considerably compared to routes from the West.

Hong Kong SAR passport holders can get a Nepal tourist visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport, the same as most nationalities.

The standard categories are 15 days for USD 30, 30 days for USD 50, and 90 days for USD 125, paid in cash. For a 15 to 17 day Annapurna Circuit trip that includes time in Kathmandu, we usually recommend the 30-day visa. It gives you room if flights get delayed on either end.

What the Annapurna Circuit Trek Actually Involves?

The Annapurna Circuit is a loop around the Annapurna massif. It crosses from the Marsyangdi valley into the Kali Gandaki valley through Thorong La pass at 5,416 m.

Unlike a there-and-back route, you walk through a new valley setting every few days. The landscape shifts from subtropical forest near Besisahar to high desert terrain past Muktinath.

Road access has changed this trek significantly over the past decade. Many trekkers now start walking near Chame or Koto instead of the traditional trailhead. This shortens the route without cutting the sections that matter most for scenery and acclimatization!

Permits You Need for the Annapurna Circuit

You need one main permit for this trek: the Annapurna Conservation Area Permit (ACAP). It costs NPR 3,000, roughly USD 23, for foreign nationals.

The National Trust for Nature Conservation issues it, and trail checkpoints throughout the conservation area check it regularly.

A guide is not a legal requirement to enter the Annapurna Conservation Area. That said, we recommend trekking with a licensed guide on the circuit, and our packages include one as standard.

Best Months to Trek the Annapurna Circuit in 2026 and 2027

March, April and May bring milder weather at lower altitude and generally clear mountain views, though afternoon cloud builds up regularly in spring.

October and November remain the most reliable months overall, with stable weather and the clearest visibility at Thorong La.

We generally steer Hong Kong-based trekkers away from the monsoon months of June to September. The eastern side of the circuit gets heavy rain, and leech activity increases below 3,000 m.

Winter treks in December and January are possible, but only with proper gear, since Thorong La regularly closes after heavy snowfall.

How Many Days to Budget for the Trek?

Most Annapurna Circuit itineraries at Everest Trekking Routes run 12 to 15 days on the trail. The exact length depends on your starting point and how many acclimatization days you build in. Add 2 to 3 days in Kathmandu for arrival, permits, and a buffer against flight delays.

For Hong Kong trekkers working with limited annual leave, we often suggest starting the walk near Chame. This trims 3 to 4 days off the total route without skipping Manang or the Thorong La crossing itself.

Round trip flights between Hong Kong and Kathmandu typically run from roughly USD 260 to USD 550. Prices depend on season and how early you book, and October and November fares tend to sit at the higher end because of demand.

A guided Annapurna Circuit package generally costs USD 900 to USD 1,600. That covers teahouse accommodation, meals on the trail, permits, and a guide. Add your visa fee and flights on top of that.

A realistic total budget from Hong Kong sits between roughly USD 1,300 and USD 2,300 for a 15 to 17 day trip. Treat these as planning figures rather than fixed quotes, since fuel surcharges and seasonal demand shift prices throughout the year.

Money, Connectivity and Packing List for Hong Kong Trekkers

Nepali Rupees are the only currency accepted on the trail. ATMs run out past Besisahar or Chame, so carry enough cash to cover the full circuit.

A local SIM card from Ncell or NTC gives basic coverage in larger villages like Manang, though signal drops out completely near Thorong La.

Pack for a wide temperature range! You will want base layers and a down jacket for the high camps, alongside lighter gear for the warmer lower valley.

Teahouses provide blankets, but many trekkers still get cold above 3,500 m without their own sleeping bag rated for sub-zero nights!
