Most people planning a Himalayan trek in Nepal are choosing between Everest, Annapurna, and Langtang. The Api Himal Base Camp Trek is not on that list, and that is exactly the point.

This route sits in Darchula district, tucked into the far northwestern corner of the country, and it sees a fraction of the traffic that Everest Base Camp or Annapurna Circuit get in a single week.

We have been getting more questions about this trek recently, mostly from experienced trekkers who have already done the popular circuits and want something genuinely remote.

So before booking this package, go ahead and read this section to learn about permits, difficulty, the itinerary, and everything else you need to plan an Api Himal Base Camp Trek properly!

What Is the Api Himal Base Camp Trek?

The Api Himal Base Camp Trek takes you to the base of Mount Api (7,132 m), the highest peak in Nepal’s Far West and the tallest mountain in the Yoka Pahar section of the Gurans Himal range.

The base camp itself sits at approximately 4,000 m, deep inside the Api Nampa Conservation Area in Darchula district.

Unlike Everest or Annapurna, this region does not have decades of trekking infrastructure behind it. There are no bakeries selling apple pie at 4,000 m here. What you get instead is a genuinely wild trail through Khas and Byansi villages, river valleys, dense forest, and alpine meadows that very few foreign trekkers have walked through.

Our 14-day itinerary takes you from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi by flight, then overland through Dadeldhura and Darchula before the actual trekking begins from Gokuleshwor. From there, you follow the Chamaliya river valley up through Karkale, Chiureni, and Simar before reaching the base camp itself.

Api Himal: The Least-Climbed 7,000m Peak in Nepal

Api stands at 7,132 m, and it is genuinely striking to look at. The peak rises roughly 3,300 m above its own base, which is a steeper and more dramatic rise than most Himalayan giants manage relative to their surrounding terrain.

That sharp vertical relief is part of why the mountain looks so imposing even from lower valley viewpoints on this trek!

The mountaineering history here is thin compared to Everest or Annapurna, and that is not an accident. The Api region was first visited by a Western explorer, A. H. Savage Landor, in 1899, when he crossed the Nampa valley and the Api glacier system before entering Tibet. Swiss geologists Arnold Heim and August Gansser mapped the area more systematically in 1936.

The first successful summit finally came on 10 May 1960, when a Japanese team from the Doshisha Alpine Society reached the top via the Northwest Face, the same line the 1954 Italian party had attempted.

Since then, climbers have summited Api only a small number of times. Records list roughly 23 successful ascents in total, including a first winter ascent on 24 December 1983 by Polish climbers Tadeusz Piotrowski and Andrzej Bieluń, both of whom died in an avalanche during their descent.

No female climber has summited Api to date. For a 7,000 m peak, that is an unusually short climbing record, and it says a lot about how remote and difficult logistics remain in this corner of Nepal.

You are not climbing Api on this trek. But standing at its base camp, knowing how few people have gone any further, adds a different kind of weight to the experience than you get standing at Everest Base Camp with a hundred other trekkers around you.

The Api Nampa Conservation Area and the Far-West Landscape

The Api Himal Base Camp Trek runs almost entirely inside the Api Nampa Conservation Area (ANCA), which was established in 2010 specifically to protect this region’s biodiversity and cultural heritage.

The conservation area covers 1,903 square kilometers and spans an extraordinary altitudinal range, from around 539 m in the subtropical lowlands to the 7,132 m summit of Api itself.

That range matters for what you actually see on the trail. You start in warm, terraced farmland near Gokuleshwor. Within a week of walking, you are moving through pine and oak forest, then rhododendron groves, and finally alpine meadows near the base camp where the vegetation thins out almost completely.

Wildlife in ANCA includes snow leopard, Himalayan black bear, red panda, musk deer, and Himalayan tahr, along with bird species like the Himalayan monal and blood pheasant. Sightings are not guaranteed on any given trek, since these animals are shy and the terrain is vast.

But the biodiversity here is genuinely one of the richest in Nepal’s conservation area network, partly because so few visitors have disturbed it.

Kali Dhunga Lake and the Chamaliya River

One detour worth knowing about is Kali Dhunga Lake, a glacial lake roughly two hours’ walk from the base camp area.

Locals consider it one of the holy lakes of the region, and it is a genuinely peaceful spot if your itinerary and energy levels allow a side visit during the exploration day.

The Chamaliya river, which you follow for much of the trek, has its own local legend. Some accounts say the river originates from a spring gifted to a meditating saint at the base of Api. Others attribute its name to nearby trees called chauleu.

Either way, this river is your constant companion from Gokuleshwor almost all the way to Simar, and it is also your main reliable water source along the route.

Byansi Culture and the People of the Chamaliya Valley

Darchula district is ethnically distinct from most of Nepal’s other trekking regions. The 2021 census recorded Chhetris as the majority at roughly 65% of the district population, with Khas Dalit communities and hill Janjati groups making up the rest.

Among those Janjati groups, the Byansi people (also called Sauka or Rang) stand out for their Tibetan-influenced culture and their own language, Byangsi.

The Byansi traditionally practiced transhumance, living in high villages like Tinkar and Chhangru near the Tibetan border during summer and migrating down to Khalanga for winter.

Historically, they were a trading community, moving wool, salt, grain, and yak products across the Himalaya into Tibet and down into India’s Terai region. You will not trek as far north as Tinkar on this particular route, but the Byansi cultural imprint is visible throughout Darchula, from the local dialect you hear to certain house styles and dress in the upper villages.

Lower down the valley, in villages like Karkale, Chiureni, and Gokuleshwor, you are mostly among Khas Chhetri communities practicing subsistence agriculture and animal husbandry.

The Gaura festival, which honors the union of Shiva and Parvati, is one of the most significant local celebrations and involves women fasting and performing the traditional Deuda dance in a circle. If your trek dates happen to line up with a local festival, it is worth asking your guide, since these celebrations rarely make it onto any tourist calendar.

Social Etiquette on the Trail

Some basic etiquette goes a long way here, mostly because visitors are so rare that locals notice everything.

Dress modestly, especially in smaller villages. Ask before photographing people directly. And do not expect English to be widely spoken once you are a day or two past Gokuleshwor, so a guide who speaks the local dialect becomes genuinely useful rather than a nice-to-have.

Permits for Api Himal Base Camp Trek

Here is something that surprises people who have trekked Manaslu before: Api Himal Base Camp Trek does not require a Restricted Area Permit (RAP).

Darchula is not classified as a restricted region the way Upper Mustang, Nar Phu, or Kanchenjunga are, even though it borders both India and Tibet.

What you actually need is simpler:

  • Api Nampa Conservation Area Entry Permit: NPR 1,000 per person, payable at the Nepal Tourism Board counter in Kathmandu or at the conservation area entry gates directly, according to the Department of National Parks and Wildlife Conservation.
  • TIMS Card (optional): Foreign trekkers in an organized group pay NPR 1,000 for a Blue TIMS card. Independent trekkers pay NPR 2,000 for a Green TIMS card.

That is it. No minimum group size, no restricted-area agency surcharge, and no special immigration office visit like you would need for Upper Mustang or Manaslu.

A registered guide is still strongly advised given how remote and undeveloped the trail infrastructure is, but it is not a legal mandate tied to a restricted permit here the way it is elsewhere.

That’s where Everest Trekking Routes comes in! We handle both permits for you as part of every Api Himal Base Camp Trek booking. Send us a copy of your passport’s biographical page and two passport-sized photos, and we process everything before you land in Kathmandu.

Difficulty Level and Physical Preparation

We grade the Api Himal Base Camp Trek as moderate to challenging, and the challenge here comes from a different place than altitude. You are not crossing a 5,000 m pass like Larke La or Thorong La.

The highest point you sleep at is base camp itself around 4,000 m, which is genuinely manageable altitude for most reasonably fit trekkers.

What makes this trek harder is the remoteness and the daily walking demand. Expect 5 to 7 hours of walking on most trekking days, often on trails that see very little maintenance compared to Everest or Annapurna routes.

Some sections involve steep, rocky ascents and stream crossings without bridges. There is no technical climbing involved, but you do need solid leg strength and genuine trekking stamina.

Fitness Recommendations

Start preparing at least 6 to 8 weeks before departure if you are not already trekking regularly. Focus on:

  • Cardiovascular endurance through daily uphill walking, running, or cycling
  • Leg strength through squats, lunges, and stair climbing
  • A weekend hike carrying a loaded daypack to simulate trail conditions

Because this region has essentially no rescue infrastructure compared to Everest or Annapurna, being genuinely fit before you arrive matters more here than almost anywhere else in Nepal.

Best Time to Trek Api Himal Base Camp

The best seasons for the Api Himal Base Camp Trek are spring and autumn, same as most Nepal treks, but the specific months matter more here because road access adds an extra layer of weather dependency.

Spring (March to May): Rhododendron forests bloom lower down the valley, and skies tend to stay clear for mountain views. This is our preferred window for first-time far-west trekkers.

Autumn (September to November): Stable weather, dry trails, and the clearest mountain visibility of the year. Autumn also avoids the worst of the monsoon-damaged roads between Dhangadhi and Darchula.

Monsoon (June to August): We do not recommend trekking during monsoon. The Mahakali Highway and connecting roads to Darchula are prone to landslides in this period, and the trekking trail itself becomes slippery and harder to navigate.

Winter (December to February): Possible but genuinely cold, especially above Chiureni. Snow can close sections of trail near base camp. Only consider this season if you have specific cold-weather trekking experience.

Getting There: Kathmandu to Darchula the Long Way

This is genuinely the part of the trip that surprises most first-time far-west trekkers. Reaching the actual trailhead takes several days of flying and driving before you put on your boots, and that travel time is part of what makes this region so remote.

Our itinerary starts with a flight from Kathmandu to Dhangadhi, the gateway city to Sudurpashchim Province, which takes roughly 65 to 90 minutes depending on the aircraft and route conditions.

From Dhangadhi, the drive north toward Darchula covers rough mountain roads and typically splits across two full days, first to Dadeldhura and then on to Darchula itself.

The final push from Darchula to the actual trekking start point near Gokuleshwor involves a further drive followed by your first trekking day. Road conditions vary significantly by season, and this is exactly why we build buffer time into our itineraries rather than promising fixed arrival windows.

Once trekking begins, there are no domestic flights or shortcuts. You are walking in and walking out, following the Chamaliya valley the entire way.

Accommodation, Food, and Connectivity Along the Trail

Accommodation on the Api Himal Base Camp Trek is genuinely basic compared to Everest or Annapurna. Expect simple teahouses and homestays in villages like Gokuleshwor, Karkale, and Chiureni, with twin-sharing rooms and shared facilities.

Above Simar, camping may be required in some sections, particularly closer to base camp, depending on current teahouse availability that season.

Food follows the same pattern you would expect anywhere remote in Nepal. Dal bhat is your reliable staple, supplemented by noodles, potatoes, and eggs. Above Chiureni, meat becomes less common due to limited refrigeration, so carrying protein bars and nuts from Kathmandu or Dhangadhi is genuinely worth doing.

Mobile connectivity is patchy at best once you are past Darchula and effectively unreliable above Karkale. An NTC SIM card gives you the best chance of occasional signal in lower villages.

If you want any communication capability near base camp, a satellite communicator like a Garmin inReach is worth the extra weight, since this is one of the few Nepal treks where it genuinely earns its place in your pack.

Health and Altitude Considerations

At roughly 4,000 m, base camp altitude here is lower than the high points on Everest, Manaslu, or Annapurna Circuit treks. That said, altitude sickness can still occur at this elevation, and the remoteness of this region makes it more serious if it does happen.

Acute Mountain Sickness (AMS) typically presents as headache, nausea, fatigue, or difficulty sleeping once you climb above roughly 2,500 to 3,000 m. Our itinerary builds in a gradual ascent profile through Karkale, Chiureni, and Simar specifically to allow for acclimatization before the final push to base camp.

If symptoms appear, tell your guide immediately. The standard response is the same anywhere in the Himalaya: stop ascending, rest, hydrate, and descend if symptoms worsen rather than improve.

Because emergency evacuation from this region is genuinely limited compared to Everest or Annapurna, where helicopter rescue is well established, travel insurance covering high-altitude trekking and emergency evacuation is not optional here. Confirm your policy covers trekking to at least 4,500 m before booking.

Why Trek With Everest Trekking Routes?

We have been organizing treks in Nepal’s less-visited regions for decades, and the far west is exactly the kind of trip where local logistics knowledge actually changes your experience.

Road conditions between Dhangadhi and Darchula shift season to season, and knowing which villages currently have reliable teahouse beds versus which ones need camping backup makes a real difference to how your trek actually unfolds.

Every Api Himal Base Camp Trek booking through Everest Trekking Routes includes airport transfers in Kathmandu, all permit processing, a licensed guide familiar with the Darchula region, and a pre-trek briefing that walks you through exactly what to expect at each stage.

We also build buffer days into the road travel sections of the itinerary specifically because this region’s transport links are less predictable than the Everest or Annapurna corridors.

If your dates or fitness level call for adjustments to this itinerary, reach out to us on WhatsApp and we will work through the details with you directly!

Trip Itinerary

Details Itinerary

Day 01: Arrival in Kathmandu (1,400 m) and Transfer to Hotel

Our representative meets you at Tribhuvan International Airport and drives you to your hotel in Thamel. Take the rest of the day at your own pace.

If you are arriving from Europe or the Americas, an afternoon nap and a short walk around Thamel usually helps more than pushing through jet lag with sightseeing.

In the evening, our team visits you for a full trek briefing. We go through the complete 15-day plan day by day, confirm your Api Nampa Conservation Area permit and TIMS documents, and check your gear list against what this specific trek actually needs, which differs from a standard teahouse trek given the camping sections higher up.

You also meet your guide for the first time here. Ask any questions about the far-west region now, since communication gets noticeably harder once you are past Darchula. Sleep early. Tomorrow starts with an early flight.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu

Day 02: Fly Kathmandu to Dhangadhi and Drive to Dadeldhura (1,900 m)

The flight to Dhangadhi takes roughly 65 to 90 minutes and drops you into the flat, humid Terai, a sharp contrast to Kathmandu’s hill-valley climate. After breakfast at a Dhangadhi hotel, you begin the drive north on the Mahakali Highway toward Dadeldhura.

This drive climbs steadily out of the lowlands into the mid-hills, and it takes approximately 4 to 5 hours depending on road conditions and the season. The road surface improves and worsens in sections, so expect a few bumpy stretches rather than continuous smooth tarmac.

You will pass through small roadside bazaars and terraced hillsides along the way, and the temperature drops noticeably as you gain elevation.

Arrive in Dadeldhura in the mid-to-late afternoon and have enough time to take a short walk around the town before dinner. Overnight at a local hotel.

Accommodation: Hotel in Dadel Dadeldhura
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 03: Drive from Dadeldhura to Darchula (940 m)

The drive today is similar to the terrain we covered yesterday, another 4 to 5 hours meandering through the mid-hill roads of Sudurpashchim. The route actually loses some elevation as you approach Darchula, which sits in the Mahakali river valley at a lower altitude than Dadeldhura.

You will notice the landscape shift as you get closer to Darchula. The Mahakali River, which forms the Nepal-India border here, comes into view at several points, and you can see the Indian town of Dharchula sitting directly across the water.

Road conditions on this stretch can vary more than the previous day, especially after monsoon damage that has not been fully repaired, so we build a little flexibility into the arrival time.

Once in Darchula, take the afternoon to rest and do any last cash withdrawals or shopping, since banking and reliable shops become sparse from here onward. Overnight in Darchula.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 04: Drive to Latinath and Trek to Gokuleshwor (850 m)

From Darchula it is a short drive, 1.5 to 2 hours, to Latinath where the road sort of ends and the real trekking begins. From Latinath, you start walking toward Gokuleshwor, a small town in Baitadi district that functions as the last proper supply point before the trail turns remote.

The walk covers roughly 10 to 12 km and takes about 3 to 4 hours, following a gentle trail through terraced farmland and small settlements along the Chamaliya valley. This is a good day to ease into trekking rhythm after two long driving days.

You will pass local houses growing millet and maize on the hillsides, and the pace is gentle enough to let you settle into a walking routine.

Arrive in Gokuleshwor by mid-afternoon and use the remaining daylight to repack your bag properly for the trekking days ahead. Overnight in a local guesthouse.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 05: Trek from Gokuleshwor to Karkale (1,200 m)

This is your first real trekking day and it gently eases you in rather than throwing a long day at you straight away. The trail out of Gokuleshwor climbs steadily through terraced fields and scattered farming settlements, gaining around 350 m over roughly 4 to 5 hours of walking.

The distance covers approximately 12 to 14 km, and the trail crosses a handful of small streams along the way, none of which require anything more than careful footing.

You will pass through a couple of small villages where local children often come out to watch trekkers pass, which is still a fairly rare sight on this route.

Lunch is usually taken trailside or in one of these villages depending on timing. Karkale itself is a modest settlement with basic accommodation, either teahouse rooms or tented camp depending on current facility availability that season. Overnight in Karkale.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Tea House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 06: Trek from Karkale to Chiureni (1,800 m)

Today is noticeably longer and more demanding than yesterday. You gain roughly 600 m over 6 to 7 hours of walking, covering approximately 14 to 16 km through denser forest as pine and oak gradually take over from the lower terraced farmland.

The trail narrows in sections and follows the Chamaliya valley more closely, with a few sustained uphill stretches that test your legs properly for the first time on this trek.

Chiureni takes its name from the chiuri, or butter tree, which grows abundantly around the village, and you will see plenty of them near the campsite. Water sources are reliable along this stretch, though we still recommend purification.

Given the distance and elevation gain, this is a full trekking day, so pace yourself and take breaks rather than pushing straight through. Overnight camping or teahouse in Chiureni (availability of beds depending).

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Tea House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 07: Trek from Chiureni to Simar (2,500 m)

This is one of the longest and most demanding days of the entire itinerary, and we say that honestly rather than glossing over it. You are gaining roughly 700 m over what typically takes 7 to 8 hours of walking, covering approximately 20 to 22 km as the trail continues following the Chamaliya river deeper into increasingly remote terrain.

The forest thins gradually as you climb, with rhododendron becoming more prominent in the mid-sections of the trail during spring. Villages become sparser here, and the settlements you do pass feel noticeably more isolated than anything from the first three trekking days.

Because this is a genuinely long day, we recommend an early departure right after breakfast to avoid finishing the last stretch in fading light.

Simar sits close to the treeline, and the temperature drop in the evening here is your first real signal that you are entering proper alpine territory. Overnight camping in Simar.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 08: Trek from Simar to Api Himal Base Camp (4,000 m)

Today combines what many longer camping-based itineraries split across two separate days, so expect a demanding 7 to 8 hours of walking and a significant 1,500 m elevation gain.

The trail leaves the last of the forest behind fairly early and moves into open alpine terrain, with loose rock and exposed sections becoming more common as you climb.

You will get your first genuinely close views of Api Himal (7,132 m) partway through the day, and the mountain dominates the skyline for the rest of the walk once it comes into view.

The pace here should be deliberately slow given both the elevation gain and the accumulated fatigue from the previous long days. We build in extra rest stops on this stretch specifically for that reason.

Arrive at base camp by late afternoon, with enough light left to settle into camp and take in the mountain views before the temperature drops sharply after sunset. Overnight camping at base camp.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Tent
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 09: Explore Base Camp and Trek Back to Simar

Wake up early if you want the clearest morning light on Api Himal, since cloud cover tends to build through the day here. Spend the morning exploring the immediate base camp area.

If your energy and the weather cooperate, a side trip to Kali Dhunga Lake is worth doing, a glacial lake roughly 2 hours’ walk away that locals consider genuinely holy.

After lunch back at base camp, you begin the descent to Simar, which takes approximately 6 to 7 hours covering the same distance you climbed yesterday.

Descending is noticeably easier on the lungs, though your legs will feel yesterday’s climb by the afternoon. The drop in altitude also brings a welcome rise in temperature and oxygen availability, and most trekkers sleep better tonight than they did at base camp. Overnight camping in Simar.

Accommodation: Stay overight at Tent
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 10: Trek from Simar to Chiureni

The route back is the same as yesterday’s outbound path, and the walk is much easier with a descent of roughly 700 m in 6-7 hours and about 20 km.

This day is intended to be at a slower more observant pace without the pressure of getting to base camp ahead of you. Use the extra mental space to notice details you likely moved past quickly on the way up, including specific rock formations along the Chamaliya valley and the exact point where forest cover returns.

Lunch is typically taken at a trailside spot roughly halfway through the day. By the time you reach Chiureni in the afternoon, the air already feels noticeably thicker and warmer compared to the last two nights at altitude. Overnight in Chiureni.

Accommodation: Stay overnight at Tea House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 11: Trek from Chiureni to Gokuleshwor

This is a long final trekking day, retracing the way back through Karkale before reaching Gokuleshwor. Expect around 8 to 9 hours of walking covering roughly 20 to 22 km, with a lunch stop in or near Karkale roughly halfway through.

The descent through familiar terrain moves faster than the outbound climb did, since you already know what is coming at each stage. By the time terraced farmland reappears in the afternoon, you will feel the difference in both temperature and air density compared to the past week above 1,800 m.

Arriving back in Gokuleshwor closes the trekking portion of this trip. Take the evening to properly clean up, repack for the road journey ahead, and reflect on the past week before overland travel resumes tomorrow. Overnight in Gokuleshwor.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Tea House
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 12: Drive from Gokuleshwor to Darchula

The trekking is done, and road travel resumes today. The drive retraces your outbound route back to Darchula, taking roughly the same 1.5 to 2 hours as the Latinath to Gokuleshwor trek did in reverse, plus the connecting drive section.

This is a genuinely restful day after 7 straight days of walking, and most trekkers appreciate having their legs simply sit in a vehicle seat for a change.

Use the afternoon in Darchula to rest properly, do laundry if needed, and enjoy a slightly wider food selection than what was available on the trail. Overnight in Darchula.

Accommodation: Stay Overnight at Lodge
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 13: Drive from Darchula to Dhangadhi

A long driving day retraces the Mahakali Highway route south, typically split by a stop in Dadeldhura depending on timing and road conditions, covering a combined 8 to 10 hours across the full stretch to Dhangadhi.

Road quality varies by season, and this is exactly why we treat this leg with flexible timing rather than a fixed arrival hour.

The descent back into the warmer Terai climate is noticeable, and by the time you reach Dhangadhi in the evening, the temperature difference from Darchula will genuinely surprise you.

Overnight in a Dhangadhi hotel, with your onward flight confirmed for the following morning.

Accommodation: Stay overnight at Hotel
Meals: Breakfast, Lunch & Dinner

Day 14: Fly from Dhangadhi to Kathmandu

Your final flight brings you back to Kathmandu in around 65 to 90 minutes, a stark contrast to the previous 13 days of overland and on-foot travel. Arriving in Kathmandu by late morning gives you a full afternoon and evening to yourself.

Use the time however suits you best: a proper hot shower, a meal you have been craving since Darchula, or a walk through Thamel to pick up souvenirs or gear you did not need on the trail.

This is also a good time to charge every device fully and back up your photos, since connectivity has been unreliable for most of the past two weeks. Overnight in Kathmandu.

Accommodation: Hotel in Kathmandu
Meals: Breakfast & Lunch

Day 15: Final International Departure

Our airport representative escorts you to Tribhuvan International Airport by private vehicle, departing 3 to 4 hours ahead of your scheduled flight to allow for check-in and security.

If your morning is free before pickup, Thamel has a good last-minute selection of pashmina, coffee, and Nepal-made trekking gear.

We hand you a trek completion certificate before you go. For 14 days, you have walked one of the least-visited trekking routes in Nepal, stood at the base of a peak fewer than two dozen people have ever summited, and crossed a region that most travelers to Nepal never even know exists.

FAQ

Is the Api Himal Base Camp Trek done as a teahouse trek or a camping trek?

Both, depending on the season and current facility availability in each village. Lower villages like Gokuleshwor, Karkale, and Chiureni increasingly have basic teahouse rooms. Above Simar, camping is still the norm, since permanent lodges have not been built out this far yet. We confirm current bed availability before your trek and pack full camping gear as backup regardless.

How much does the Api Himal Base Camp Trek cost?

Costs vary based on group size, season, and how much camping equipment and staff support your itinerary requires, since this trek needs more porter and kitchen support than a standard teahouse route like Everest or Annapurna.

What is the porter and guide setup like on this trek?

Because sections above Simar require camping, your crew typically includes a licensed guide, a cook, and enough porters to carry tents, kitchen equipment, and food supplies, in addition to your personal gear. This is a larger support team than most teahouse treks in Nepal require.

Can I drink water directly from streams along the trail?

The Chamaliya river and its tributaries provide a constant supply of water throughout the trek but we do recommend purification tablets, drops or a filter rather than drinking untreated water straight from the source, as the quality may vary after rain or near grazing areas.

Is there an ATM or bank in Darchula or Gokuleshwor?

Banking facilities are limited in Darchula town so you should withdraw whatever cash you need here before continuing. There are no reliable banking facilities at Gokuleshwor and beyond so carry enough Nepali rupees to last the entire trek.

What visa do I need to enter Nepal for this trek?

Most nationalities can get a visa on arrival at Tribhuvan International Airport. A 30-day visa costs USD 50 and is the practical choice given how much of this itinerary involves overland travel with unpredictable timing.

Is the Api Himal Base Camp Trek safe for solo female trekkers?

Yes, provided you trek with a licensed guide, which we strongly recommend given the region’s remoteness regardless of gender. The communities along this route are conservative and generally very hospitable, though modest dress is genuinely appreciated given how rarely foreign visitors pass through these villages.

What wildlife might I actually see on this trek?

Sightings are not guaranteed, but the Api Nampa Conservation Area supports snow leopard, Himalayan tahr, musk deer, and Himalayan monal, among other species. Most trekkers see tahr or monal at some point. Snow leopard sightings are rare and largely a matter of luck.

Can this trek be combined with other far-west Nepal destinations?

Yes. Saipal Himal Base Camp and Rara Lake are both within reach of this general region, though they require additional days and separate route planning. Contact us if you want to build a longer far-west itinerary around this trek.

Do I need any special vaccinations before this trek?

No vaccinations are specifically required for this trek beyond standard travel health precautions for Nepal, though we recommend consulting a travel medicine clinic 4 to 6 weeks before departure for routine and destination-specific advice.

Is mobile charging available during the camping sections of the trek?

No reliable electricity exists above Simar. Carry at least one large power bank, and consider a small solar charger if you are trekking during a season with consistent sun exposure, since device charging becomes genuinely difficult for several consecutive days.

How does this trek compare to Everest Base Camp or Manaslu in terms of crowds?

There is genuinely no comparison. Where Everest Base Camp sees thousands of trekkers annually, Api Himal Base Camp sees a small fraction of that number, and it is common to go entire trekking days without encountering another foreign trekker on the trail.

Is a minimum group size required to book this trek?

No. Unlike restricted-area treks such as Upper Mustang, there is no minimum group size requirement here, since Api Himal does not fall under RAP rules. Solo trekkers, couples, and larger groups can all book this itinerary with a licensed guide.

Everest Base Camp Via Island Peak Climbing

I’m Vatsal, and I just completed the Island Peak Climbing and Everest Base Camp trek with Everest Trekking Routes Pvt. Ltd. One of the most incredible experiences of my life.

Rabin, the company owner, was exceptional from the very start. When I ran into an issue at the airport with missing paperwork for immigration, he immediately stepped in and helped me get back to Kathmandu to reschedule. He even went above and beyond to arrange a helicopter to Lukla so I could rejoin the trek without losing days, something I was truly grateful for. That kind of care and responsiveness when things go wrong tells you everything about the quality of a company.

My trekking guide Ramesh was outstanding throughout the entire journey. He was knowledgeable, caring, and made sure the trip felt personal rather than just another package tour. He consistently picked the best routes for me and worked with me to adjust the plan on the way down to make every day memorable. Having him by my side from Kathmandu all the way through the Khumbu made an enormous difference.

The climbing sherpa arranged by the company for the Island Peak portion was equally professional and made the high altitude climbing section feel safe and well guided.

If you are considering trekking or climbing in Nepal, book with Everest Trekking Routes without hesitation. Rabin runs an operation that genuinely puts its clients first and Ramesh is simply one of the best guides you could ask for in the Himalayas.

Annapurna Base Camp & Mardi Himal Trek

I did a ‘solo’ ( with a trekking guide of course) 14 days Annapurna Base Camp Trek + Mardi Himal Base Camp Trek back to back. Starting from Kathmandu, my guide and me took a bus to Pokhara. The next day we moved on to Nayapul, report at the ACA checkpost at Birethanti and starts trekking to Uerali and stay overnight there. After breakfast the next morning, we trekked to Ghorephani and visited Poon Hill the next day. From there, we trekked through the beautiful serene forest to Chueli on the fifth days, Sinuwa on the sixth, Deurali on the seventh, and finally reached Annapurna Base Camp (ABC) on the eight days.

The terrains varies; going through dirt road from Birethanti, villages trails with built steps, natural forest trails, and a snow-covered trail from Machapuchare Base Camp to ABC.
On the ninth, tenth, and eleventh day, we trekked from ABC down to Sinuwa, then on to Landruk, and finally ascended to Mardi Himal Low Camp and High Camp. We started trekking up the to Mardi Himal Base Camp at 4 am and reached the base camp at 7 am. The weather was beautiful and bright, allowing us to enjoy a clear, 360-degree panoramic view with no fog in sight.
After spending an hour at the Base Camp, we trekked down to Low Camp, continuing to Sidhing for the night.

The following day, we headed back to Pokhara, thus completed the 14 days trek.
The highlights of the trek were undoubtedly the views, which became almost beyond comprehension upon entering the high-altitude zone. You simply have to see them yourself to fully appreciate them. Along the lower trails, I also encountered an abundance of beautiful flowers, most notably the red rhododendron, which is Nepal’s national flower. Additionally, I spotted several beautiful birds that are found only in Nepal or specific parts of the Himalayas.

Regarding trekking management, I am incredibly grateful to my guide and trekking companion, Mr. Torche Gurung. He oversaw my accommodation and meals, and he was always on hand to help carry my extra baggage. He is also highly knowledgeable about the routes, the itinerary, the mountain peaks, and the flora and fauna we encountered along the trails.

Last but not least, I would like to thank Mr. Rabin Gurung and his crew at Everest Trekking Routes Pvt. Ltd. for arranging the itinerary and handling all the logistics for this trek. I highly recommend that anyone wanting to trek in Nepal engage this company as their trekking agent.
As an additional note, this was my fifth visit to Nepal, and Mr. Rabin and his company have been my agents throughout, thanks to their excellent service and fair and reasonable trekking costs.

Pike Peak Trek Reviews

We have a great time. Good guide and porters. Most teahouses on the trek were sufficient, some with WiFi and hot showers payable to the teahouse. Meals with ginger tea and coffee provided was good with additional orders affordable and bottled water purchased. Pikey Peak Trek itself was great with fantastic views as we were lucky with clear skies but very strong winds on the way to pikey peaks camp and to summit which was normal for this peak but not mentioned in the briefing..so not only windbreakers but down jackets and gloves required to beat the wind chill.

This is a good short trek with excellent mountains views, weather permitting. The trekking total cost was affordable and organisation was excellent. A big thank you to Mr.Rabin, Veer, Suman, Man and Bisal… Source by: Wetravel

Annapurna Base Camp Trek

I absolutely loved the ABC Trek! From start to finish, the entire journey was made smooth, safe, and truly enjoyable. As a solo female traveler and first-time trekker, I was quite nervous about committing to 8 days of high-altitude trekking. However, my worries disappeared thanks to the excellent support from the team.

My guide, Sukra, was outstanding. He is not only highly experienced and responsible but also incredibly patient and knowledgeable. He taught me so much about the local plants and animals, culture, and traditions along the way. More than just a guide, he acted like a caring teacher to me. He constantly reminded me to take my altitude medicine, carefully monitored my condition, and adjusted our pace accordingly. His weather judgment was excellent — knowing exactly when to pause at a teahouse or when it was safe to continue.
He also taught me important lessons about respecting the mountains, the environment, and the hardworking porters. For example, always give way to the porters so we wouldn’t disturb their rhythm. These small but meaningful lessons made the trek even more enriching.

We shared so many laughs and beautiful moments together that I now carry wonderful memories from this adventure. I felt safe, supported, and carefree throughout — exactly what I needed for my first Himalayan trek.
I highly recommend this trekking company to anyone considering the ABC Trek or any other route in Nepal. The professionalism, care, and personal touch truly set them apart. I’m already looking forward to returning for a more challenging trek next time!

Manaslu Circuit Larke La Pass Trek

I had a wonderful experience on this trip, thanks to the excellent service and support provided by Rabin and his team. From the start, Rabin was very prompt in answering all my questions and helped me prepare thoroughly. Everything was well organized — from transportation to accommodations — making the entire journey smooth and stress-free.

When I mentioned wanting to visit Pokhara before returning to Kathmandu, Rabin took care of all the necessary arrangements without any hassle on my end. As a solo traveler, I felt very safe and well looked after. During an unexpected delay before the trek began, Rabin even took the time to show me around Kathmandu, which I truly appreciated. His constant care and support made the trip far more enjoyable than I could have imagined. I highly recommend his services to anyone considering a trek in Nepal.

Regarding the trek itself, my guide Aita was incredibly strong, capable, and ensured I reached each destination safely. If you’re looking to complete your trek at a faster pace, I would definitely recommend Aita — we finished our trek in 10 days instead of the originally planned 12! However, if you prefer a slower pace to take in the scenery, it’s a good idea to communicate that with him early on, as he naturally moves quite quickly.

While Aita’s English is still developing, he makes a strong effort to improve and is very hardworking. Thanks to his close relationship with tea house owners, he was able to arrange complimentary hot showers, Wi-Fi access, and clean water during our stay — all of which made a big difference in comfort throughout the trek.

Overall, I’m very happy with the experience and grateful for both Rabin’s planning and Aita’s guidance on the trail

Annapurna Circuit Trekking in Nepal

Everest Three Pass Trekking Feedback

I hired this agency to do the Everest Three Passes Trek in the Everest region, and my experience was exceptional. From the very beginning, they demonstrated commitment and professionalism in every detail of the journey.

The service standard was very high, showing absolute loyalty to their clients, always prioritizing my safety and satisfaction. The team had extensive technical knowledge for trekking in challenging and difficult terrains, which was key to enjoying the trek with confidence.

In addition, the guide, Veer Garung, was not only an expert in the biodiversity of the region but also knew the names of the mountains in Nepali, Sherpa, and English, which greatly enriched my experience. His understanding of the local flora and fauna was impressive, adding unique value to the trip.

The agency has certified guides with vast experience and equipped with everything necessary to ensure a safe and comfortable trekking experience. Guide Veer Garung speaks four languages fluently, which facilitated communication and demonstrated an exceptional level of professionalism.

It is also worth noting that the agency’s owner, Rabin Garung, has solid prior experience as a guide, which is reflected in the quality of service and attention to detail. I wholeheartedly recommend this agency, especially guide Veer Garung, to anyone seeking an authentic and professional experience in the Himalayas. Without him, my experience would not have been the same, not only because of his services but also because of his warmth and attention to detail at every moment.

Highly recommended trekking company and trek

Sonya and I (school friends from the UK) cannot rate this trekking company highly enough. They are a family business with Rabin at the helm. They come from a small village west of the Langtang Valley and are very experienced. Rabin was so responsive and helpful, answering all our questions. He makes sure that you are well cared for throughout your trip.

Our guide was Veer (Rabin’s nephew). He was the kindest, most respectful gentleman, I have had the pleasure of knowing. He always had a big smile and looked after our every need.

Our porter was Michael (Veer’s cousin). The relationship between them was lovely. Michael is just 18 and on a break from high school. His ambition is to be a guide and he will make an excellent one.

The trek was beautiful. Starting in the forests and then opening up on the second day to reveal the expansive valley and snow-capped mountains. The treks are tough but rewarding. Don’t come unprepared. You should be ready to walk multiple days up and down slopes, some are rocky and can be slippery. But around every corner, there is a view to die for.

We climbed Tsergo Ri. It was tough over 4500 m altitude but the boys encouraged us to keep going slowly slowly. Many trekkers say the views from this mountain are the best they have seen in multiple trips to Nepal. As this was our first, we can’t compare. But it was amazing.

Also, be prepared for extremes in the accommodation. We stayed in a couple of lovely hotels/ guest houses. The first and last night in the Garden Inn was great. But the best was night 3 at Tip Top. At Lama Hotel on Days 2 and 6, it was basic but you can pay for a hot shower in an outside shack. Also, be prepared for any weather. We were lucky, but I’m sure it could be cold and wet.

If I were to recommend one thing, it is to book your trip with Rabin. And if possible, book Veer as your guide.

The most amazing trip of my life!

I had the most amazing adventure of my life. From the moment we landed at the airport to the trek in the Himalayas and our last days in Kathmandu, Rabin and his team made every moment unforgettable. Our guide, Sushil, was not only friendly and kind, but also incredibly professional. He took great care of my friends and me throughout the entire trek, ensuring that our experience was enjoyable. Sushil and his team constantly boosted our spirits, despite carrying our heavy duffles daily. One day, when I couldn’t keep up with the group, Sushil walked with me patiently until we reached the guest house. Their dedication and positivity made the trip truly special. Manaslu Circuit Larkya La Pass Trek

This is my second time using Everest trekking routes services. I managed to complete the Manaslu Circuit trek as per the itinerary arranged by ETR and guided by Sukra Gurung. I specifically requested Sukra as my guide, As I was comfortable with his service the first time. He was an experienced guide, He assessed the situation (weather, my condition, landscape, etc.) during the trekking. And prompts me into discussion for decision-making, as we are all well aware that not all trekking goes according to plan. He did it excellently, and we successfully reached Larke Pass and back to Kathmandu on time.

It was no easy task as we had to improvise routes due to landslides, strenuous routes, long distances, rain, and time management but we managed to pull it through. Therefore, I was extremely happy with his guidance and services and most likely will use his services for my future trekking in Nepal again. Many thanks to Rabin Gurung, as usual, for clearly answering and explaining all of my inquiries before confirmation of my booking. Again, I truly appreciate the efforts provided by the Everest Trekking Routes Team, Rabin Gurung, and Sukra Gurung for making this a successful and memorable journey for me. Thank you so much, and looking forward to another adventure with your team again.

And he is a very very professional trekking guide, he always keep to trekking in front of me, and keep the road safe don’t be get lost, sometimes when the horse and donkey or wild animals are crossing on the trek, he will made a quick decision to keep you safe, otherwise that would made danger.

My guide ( Mr Sandesh) always solves all the problems for me, once I am tire can walk very slowly so I can’t on time arrived at the hotel which were full booking already, so he quickly arranged the other hotels for me, at last luckily he made it !!!!! so I don’t need to keep walk far to the other hotels and can take a rest at the nearest one, that’s he always keep arrange for me !!!

At last day on trekking, I got sick and had a fever feel so cool and uncomfortable, he bring me a bottle of hot water and some fever medicine, after a rest day, I feel better and got the energy again !!! and finnished the trekking at the end back to Kathmandu.

On the other hand, my porter (Mr Michael ) he is also helpful and friendly, he always treks at my back during the whole journey and cover for me to keep me safe, (Michael) is a young man, he is very funny and always keep smiling, we always joking and sharing for the Nepal local culture for me, its so glad.

That is the wonderful trekking experience of my life, I believe that if I hadn’t My guide (Sandesh) & porter (Michael) for the fully support, that I can’t be success the whole trekking, thx both of them!! and thx a lot !!!

Annapurna Circuit Trek 2024!

Just did the Annapurna Circuit Trek. It was tiring but rewarding! The trek included Ice Lake, Tilicho Lake, and Thorong La Pass. The scenery changes with every passing town, making it an ever-changing journey. Towards the destinations, the scenery becomes out of this world with the whole mountains in your face that you can only enjoy in the Himalayan range. During this time, our guide Sukra and porter Madan have been friendly, patient, and helpful.

When I suffered from altitude sickness, Sukra swiftly brought me down and gave me garlic soup. He regularly communicates what to expect the next day in terms of intensity and things to expect. He regularly checks on our conditions and adjusts rests and pace accordingly. And he was delightful to talk to when we were resting in the lodges.

Madan carries quite a bit of our load, including water. Even if he’s carrying a heavy load, in “dangerous” sections, Madan follows and makes sure no one is lagging. (Don’t misunderstand. Porters should go ahead of the group as they carry really heavy loads but on some instances when the group is supposed to keep together, he acts as a sweeper)

5 Days Mardi Himal Trek

Our guide and porter (Som & Sandesh) were really friendly and fun to be with during the entire trek. It made the hike more endurable and enjoyable. They were also helpful during the entire hike, checking in on us etc. The early 5 am morning hike up to the viewpoint was not the easiest as it was steps for close to 2 hours but our guide was patient and told us slowly, one step at a time which was comforting to hear. But the view at the top was really worth it.

One small note though was that we signed up for 5 day Mardi Himal trek but based on our fitness level (realizing we hike quite fast and relatively experienced), our guide decided to compress it to 4 day hike (after day 1 of the hike) which we only realized through our conversations with him. Would have appreciated him informing us. Not much major impact as the guide booked a hotel for us in Pokhara on the last day anyway. We now gained an extra day in the city! It is also a good thing for us now to explore more things but sad to leave the mountains earlier!

3-4 day hike is manageable for most people with average fitness level. We hiked about an average 6-7 hours for first 2 days with it stretching to about 8-9 hours on the last day at an average speed for relatively experienced hikers. 5 days will be recommended for those who want to take it really slow.

Otherwise, great experience with our guide and porter and the tour company. Thank you!

Dhansingh had make our trekking more pleasant and easier by encouraging and taking care of the younger trekkers. Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Rabin Gurung

If you feel it please skip to the last line. My name is Patibut Preeyawongsakul. I have been trekking since 2012. I do either individual trekking or going with a mountain guide. I was with Rabin on Annapurna Trekking in Dec 2015. Not only on the mountains but also roaming around in the city. I was with him for totally 15 days. By 4 years of my trekking around Asia (and a little hiking in the US), Rabin is the best mountain guide so far. Rabin knows how to take care of any kind of trekkers from slow ladies to teenagers. Luckily we didn’t need his first aid kit which he always carries it in his backpack. He’s expert in almost mountains’ information in Nepal (including sometimes Tibet). He can calculate the trip’s timing very precisely. We could change the itinerary on the way we walk without affecting flight schedule (we had one more day on the base camp last time.) Though, His skill still not matches his humbleness and hospitality. I had been seriously discussing with him for 6 months with nothing guarantee I’d go with him, but he happily helped me decide which route to take. He frankly showed the cost breakdown before we make a final decision. He welcomed us at the airport, and all of my team had his souvenirs on the day we flew back to our home country. If you want a short review, Hire this guy. 10/10 would go with him again.

Everest Base Camp and Island Peak Climbing

I’m so grateful that I finally finished the trekking, and this must be credited to our professional guide, Rabin! He is so nice! He cared for us so much, and greeted us with his big warming smile during the whole journey! Before this trekking, the highest place I had ever been was only 934 meters, I was so worried about high altitude problem. But In fact, my adaptability was pretty good, cuz Rabin’s trekking plan was so suitable for me that I finally reached EBC and Kala Pattar under the snow and strong winds! When we backed to Island Peak Base Camp after the summit, he brought hot drinks and biscuits and waited for us on the way, that was so sweet and we were really really exhausted and hungry at that time, he just like an angel showed up to us!. It’s a great trekking journey and I really thank Rabin’s guiding and accompanying us! We shared precious moments on this journey!.

Manaslu Circuit & Tsum Valley with Rabin Gurung

Recently my wife and I visited Nepal for the eighteenth time and enjoyed a wonderful trek, one of the best treks ever, and this was largely due to our guide, Rabin Gurung (Trekking Guide in Nepal), with whom we also trekked around Manaslu in 2010.

If you come to Nepal with the idea of doing ‘your own trek’ with a small party, I highly recommend hiring Rabin. Not only does he have many years of experience but he is very honest and humble, so much so that one woman at a very basic lodge on our recent trek, impressed by his honesty, told my wife that “this man is a very good man, honest man, all other guide-man say lie to customers, say them that price is higher than the real price, so they can get more money.”

Rabin is always in good humor and friendly and gets along well with the local people and the porters too. Furthermore, his varied experience from his earlier years as a porter and cook helped to make him a better guide. I can’t remember how many times during our treks, when we stopped at a new or very basic lodge, or even at a tea house for lunch, when the owner’s cooking skills were at most primitive, Rabin tactfully volunteered to move into the kitchen and some amazingly delicious food would come out, made from the most simple ingredients.

Three years ago, in March of 2010, the Manaslu trek was not what it is now. Along the entire trek from Arughat (where we had to start walking), until we reached to Annapurna circuit route, there was at that time only a single lodge with what could be called a ‘menu’, and that was the one and only lodge in Sama village at that time. All other villages either had nothing but dal bhat and perhaps chapatis, or nothing to eat and no lodge at all. We had to camp some places, but when we could, we stayed in the simple lodges that existed and he often improved our diet by cooking foods that the proprietor did not know how to cook, sometimes even such a basic menu item as an omelet, to be rolled up inside a chapati for breakfast.

This year, again in March, we decided to return to the same area, with the desire to explore the newly opened valley of Tsum. This is a lovely, beautiful valley populated by some 4000 Tibetan people, who have lived for nearly a thousand years in that inaccessible ‘hidden valley’, connected by easy passes to Tibet but until not so many decades ago, without any reasonable connection to Nepal through the truly stupendous canyons of the lower section of the valley. Indeed, many inhabitants could not speak any Nepali, only Tibetan, which made it difficult at times. We had a double permit, which if you ever want to see Tsum Valley thoroughly, I highly recommend. Most people try to do a quick one-week detour to Tsum Valley as a kind of bonus side trip on the way around Manaslu. They never know what they have missed. Some of the most interesting villages and friendliest people, and some truly awesome scenery, can be visited in Tsum valley if you have time. One week is too little time to see more than a quick glimpse of the Valley.

I and my wife have been trekking in Nepal for years, myself since 1981, and our trek to Manaslu was the first time we had ever used a guide (because it was required on that trek), despite having visited some very remote areas such as crossing the Trashi Labtsa Pass from Khumbu into Rolwaling with friends in 1982. I had doubts about using a guide, I had seen how so many of them control their clients and take a commission from lodge owners to fill their pockets, I have seen many guides from Kathmandu who knew less about the local people and places than I did. I say this not to boast but as a word of caution: there are all too few honest, humble, helpful, and experienced guides out there, and many of those who are have moved into the higher levels of trekking management and no longer guide. But from the first days, on our 2010 Manaslu trek, we were impressed by the level of experience Rabin has, and also his sensitivity in allowing us to make our own itinerary day by day. He never was angry, never showed irritation, always explained patiently what was going on, and was always in a good mood. We were a group of five at that time, and by the end of the first week, we all agreed that if we returned to Nepal for another trek requiring a guide, we would try to get Rabin again.

This is what we did in March 2013 on our visit to Tsum Valley. Using more porters in order to have tents and extra food, we planned to visit the highest area of the upper end of Tsum Valley and ascend to one of the high passes overlooking Tibet. This year was plagued by poor weather and too much snow in March, however, and we were unable to do that, as were all the people who had set out to trek around Manaslu this March: the deep snow at higher elevations did not allow anyone in the first weeks of March to cross the Larkya La and go around Manaslu. But we had time, and because of the tents and food we had, we also had more options. The tents and food we used in a wonderful visit to the nunnery at Gumalungdang, up a steep side valley surrounded by the huge peaks of Ganesh Himal. We camped there for two nights, as there is no accommodation yet, and enjoyed incredible sunrise views of the nearby Ganesh Himal and also the distant great Peaks of HImalchuli, Ngadi Chuli, and Manaslu.

Tsum Valley is developing rapidly, as is the Manaslu circuit. However, particularly if you are new to Nepal trekking, don’t believe the hype that many agencies will tell you, that the Manaslu trek is the “new Annapurna circuit”. The Annapurna trek, over a period of three decades, developed a huge infrastructure for trekkers, with scores and scores of hotels, often equipped with deluxe menus and services, hot showers, laundry service, spring mattresses, etc. I think it will be some time yet before these things appear on the Manaslu trek, and if you find them in some places, don’t expect them at the next place. Tsum Valley is one step back in development yet.

One problem to watch out for is this: Manaslu Tsum Valley’s popularity and this can be said for Manaslu too, is growing much faster than services can be built–may be large because the road around Annapurna has grown so quickly and has put people off from that once glorious trek. We were there both times in March when there are fewer trekkers than in April or especially during the high season in October and November. In Tsum, as of March 2013, there was only one real lodge with rooms, and that was just a bit beyond Lokhpa at the foot of the valley. The other ‘lodges’ were basically beds in a side room of a local house, the largest such able to sleep ten people but others only four or five. Most villages had only one such place for trekkers to sleep, some villages had no place. When we reached Mu Gompa, in March all but one of the 80 monks were away from the valley for the winter, and furthermore, there was no food available at all. Only because we had our tents and stove and food for going higher up the valley (which we were unable to do because of snow), were we able to stay there e and eat our own food, instead of returning to Nile village the same day. The same goes for Gumbalunddang, where no food was available. if you are going o visit Tsum valley, and perhaps Manaslu too, during the busiest season, think seriously about hiring at least one EXTRA porter and having a tent, stove, and food, in case of accommodation is full! It might be worth it! Also, think of the porters: we saw many groups of two or three with a guide and a single porter carrying an enormous load, who was trailing far behind the others during the day. Many of them were unhappy with the arrangement.

In conclusion, this time with four people in our group, and with several porters and with Rabin as our guide again, we once more enjoyed what all agreed was one of the best treks we’ve ever done in the Himalayas, out of a total number of over thirty now, in Nepal and India. Rabin is an excellent choice for a guide. He is honest and will help you save money instead of trying to find ways to squeeze more for himself, he is fun and funny and friendly and all along the trails, he makes new friends with the people we meet along the way. He is experienced but doesn’t try to tell the customers what to do, he asks what they want to do, and then explains the options. If you are the type of trekker who is truly interested in Nepal, in the places, the culture, and religion and people and villages, and like to understand what is happening around you, hire Rabin as your guide, you won’t be disappointed. Indeed, like us (except for one, the same group that went around Manaslu with Rabin three years earlier), perhaps you will want to return to Nepal and go on another trek with Rabin Gurung!

Everest Base Camp & Lobuche Peak with Rabin Gurung

It was such a hard fight to join this trip. Because I had to work hard to find funding for this training. It is the first summit I attended team NOBAT ( No Boundary Adventurers Association Sabah ) to the Himalayas with ETR (Everest Trekking Routes Pvt. Ltd.), I gained a great experience, which Mr. Rabin Gurung was very friendly and kind as a mountain guide who experience he made this trip so enjoyable, and build a better friendship.

I would like to thank him for giving the best service to us, this is the first time I walk for 21 days hahaha. In every step, he remained faithful to accompany and not leave us, even though there are 2 people in our group who did not succeed, and he sent us back to our high camp Lobuche to support the spirit reaching the summit of Lobuche Peak Climbing.

Nice trip and good services such as tents, food, and stories you tell about your family, it is good, and I enjoyed the trip because you protected me and my team so much.

Keep up the good work you AMG! I am happy to see and to know you! Good luck! * extra bonus able to speak Bahasa Melayu! hehe

Everest Base Camp Trek with Suk Bahadur Gurung

Searching for the perfect company to embark on the EBC trek was not easy when doing research on who to go with. I happen to have really lucked out by choosing to go with Everest Trekking Routes, because they were great, through and through.

I did the trek in November but started inquiring with them back in February. Rabin is the CEO of the company, and he has helped me in every way possible. He was prompt in answering my questions via email and meticulously arranged the EBC trek, which felt customized to all my needs. In person, he was kind and courteous. And my guide Suk was friendly and helpful throughout the hike. He had brought all the necessary medication for me and asked every day how I was feeling. Suk is also a very good card player and was grateful for his company on the 12-day hike/ Kathmandu City Hike.

I’m sure most of you reading this have gone with some tour company elsewhere in the world, and perhaps you might agree that most of them have treated you as simply a commodity in the assembly line. By going with Everest Trekking Routes, I never felt that. Rabin and Suk took care of me from beginning to end, and I sing all their praises for getting me to Everest Base Camp, which was a major deal for me and my friends and Family. Rabin and Suk became family to me. Thank you for everything, guys!

Everest Base Camp and Annapurna Base Camp Trek with Rabin Gurung

This is my second trip with Rabin and I am already looking forward to a third trip with him soon. That shows how much I value his services, his extensive experiences with the treks, his honesty, and of course, the great supporting staff he have.

I feel safe and well taken care of with Rabin as my guide. He is a man with integrity and deal in a most honest way with us. This is unlike lots of horror stories you read about guides and tea-house owners collaborating to fleece hikers. We pay exactly what we consumed at the tea houses based on the published menu prices, no more and no less. With Rabin, there is no hidden cost.

With more than 25 years of trekking experience, he gave good advises on the route and safety measures to take. For example, he insisted that we started off early on a particular day so that we will reach a section with an ice sheet before the ice started to melt and traversing the ice-sheet becomes dangerous and difficult.

We have a large team of porters and assistant guides to take care of our team of 12 hikers and everyone on Rabin’s team have been extremely helpful and friendly. My teenage son enjoyed playing Uno and sliding down the ABC  Trek icy slope with a teenage porter, a fellow hiker who has walking difficulties was supported all the way by assistant guides and porters and our meals were all ordered in advance so the group don’t have to wait long for food to be served.

Island Peak, Everest Base Camp and Lobuche Peak Climbing (October 2022)

I have now used Everest Trekking Routes for two trips to Nepal. I can’t put my finger on anything that needs improvement. The initial communication part is spot on. They are quick to respond and I usually my questions answered on the first reply. Both times I have been greeted at the airport by a super polite guide. I’ve felt welcome and gotten all my needs tended to.
On my second trip, we could not fly to Lukla, because of bad weather. Instead of waiting for the weather to clear up, they arranged alternative transport to the mountains, to avoid wasting precious days in Kathmandu.

The whole city experience has been an absolute pleasure. Except for the hard work, summiting a mountain 😅

Best recommendations to the guys from Everest Trekking Routes 👌

Manaslu basecamp and Circuit and Tsum Valley

I have just completed a trek of the Manaslu Circuit and Tsum valley with three other friends. The trip was magnificent, stunning mountain peaks, ancient forest, impressive rivers and waterfalls and interesting villages. During the trip we were very well looked after by our guide, Dhansingh Gurung who gently and efficiently took us through 21 days of trekking over diverse terrain and Sangam (Durga) our porter who was always helpful and cheerful. Both Dhansingh and Durga added considerably to the enjoyment of the experience with their friendliness and local knowledge. If I return to Nepal, I will definitely use our guide and porter again.

Manaslu Circuit Trekking

Positive experience liaising with Everest Trekking for our Manaslu Circuit Trek.
The guide made adjustments to our plans based on our comfort/fitness level and the weather so that we managed to finish the trail.
Our guide helped us secure some last-minute stuff for us like our sleeping bag rentals.
Most importantly the hike itself was great as well thanks to our guide for his hospitality and our porter’s hard work.
Appreciate the apples cut for us every night during the hike carried by the guide and to the porter for pushing through even though his eyes hurt from the sun glare from the snow.
Thank you for this great experience.

Wonderful Experience trekking in Manaslu

Had a wonderful time hiking at the Manaslu area with my tour guide Sushil Gurung and porter Madan Gurung. They helped us with our every need from last minute rental gear like sleeping bags to telling us more about Nepal and being knowledgeable about the area. Both of them are experienced and knowledgeable. Both of them are very observant about how you are coping with the pace and terrain and will change pace to suit your pace.

Amazing experience, Beautiful scenery with professional and helpful guide!!!! Langtang Trek 7 Days

It was my first time in Nepal and my first “long” trek, Rabin and Samuel from Everest Trekking Routes certainly made it one of the most memorable trip for me!

Prior to my booking, Rabin was very patient in answering my many questions. Communication was very smooth and easy. He warmly welcomed me at the airport and introduced me to my guide, Samuel, who will accompany me throughout the 7 days trip. They take care of all the logistics, permits, transports etc. ( there were many check points on the way so permits are essential)

Needless to say, Samuel did an excellent job, very professional and kind to me the whole trip. He is always available to assist, whether it’s to help carry my bag, help me to go down when I have some trouble with the knees, to showing the many animals along the way, or help fixing my shoes, he was always so accommodating, kind and helpful.
All the food and accommodations picked by them were very good and comfortable. Couldn’t have done this trip with so much joy without Samuel, big kudos!!!

Regarding the trek, the scenery is so surreal and varried. Snow capped mountains, glaciers, lush green valley, dense forest, rivers, many animals and beautiful flowers, you get to see it all on this trip. I will forget many things in my life but certainly, Langtang valley will always have a special place in my memories for its breathtaking beauty!!!!

For me, a woman in early 30s, regularly exercise, this was a moderate trek, there was some challenging parts but not that difficult. I don’t walk alot at home, but to complete 6hr walking every day on the trip for me wasn’t that difficult. We also got lucky with weather, clear sky for most days. Even when it’s rain a little and get foggy, it’s still so beautiful and mystic. Also you get to meet other trekkers along the way and gathering at teahouses, where we are served supper yummy fresh cooked dishes. It wad not crowded at all, or so I feel, cause I meat many people at the tea houses but along the way, you don’t really see anyone.

So well, what more can I say, do yourself a favor, book with them and enjoy the trip, you won’t be disappointed!!!

P. s: consider taking the jeep to go there, the road is terrible and many mountain passes with sharp u-turn corners.
