Now, let’s delve deeper into Mera Peak Climbing Itinerary & Cost: Everything you need to know.
Don’t think that climbing trekking peak is like walking in the trekking route simply because it is not called expedition. In fact, you have to reach the summit of snow – clad mountains. It requires proper training, mountaineering knowledge, and physical fitness. Some of these peaks are technically difficult. However, Mera Peak is ideal for beginner climber even if it is Nepal’s tallest trekking peak. There are no technical sections and steep ascents. In fact, there are some instances where even 8 year old kid has successfully climbed the peak. Therefore, you can call this mountain an ideal for beginner climber. Having said this, you should prepare well both physically and mentally.
Prior experience is not required and you don’t need exclusive mountaineering training for this peak climbing. You will be given brief training on the day of acclimatization before heading to the Mera Peak High Camp.
You can get different types of Mera Peak Climb Itinerary. It has at least three trail heads which climbers can choose according to their comfort. Major trailheads of the Mera Peak Trekking are Khari Khola and Lukla. There are two routes from Lukla. The first one is via Zatrawala Pass and the second one is also called circuit trek route via Paiya Pangom.
As mentioned above, Lukla is the major gateway to Mera Peak and other trekking destinations of Everest region. The best way to reach Lukla is by flight. You should note that the Lukla flights operate from Kathmandu Domestic Airport and Manthali Ramechhap Airport. It depends upon the time of the year. Nowadays, there is an option of road transportation to reach nearby Lukla but it is not well maintained yet.
Another trail head of the Mera Peak Climb is Khari Khola. Interestingly, you don’t have to use the Lukla Flight as you can reach Khari Khola by jeep from Kathmandu. If you wish to avoid the chaos of Lukla flight, then you can try the Khari Khola route.
On the second day of the trek from Lukla, trekkers have to cross the iconic Zatrawala also known as Zatru La Pass after spending night in Chutanga. The climb can be tiring but once at the top, you get to see the mesmerizing scenery of mountains, valleys, and cascading hills. It is completely the different view of the Everest region of Nepal. Upon crossing the pass, trekkers spend overnight in Thulikharka.
The last overnight place in the Mera Peak Trekking route is Khare Village. You can reach Khare via Kothe and Thaknak. These two villages are well maintained and densely populated where you can find proper accommodation and meals. The trail from Thuli Kharka to Khare via Kothe and Thaknak is rugged and rough. Therefore, you must tread carefully and must heed the instructions of trekking guide.
Finally the climbing Sherpa guide takes over from trekking guide from this day onwards. You will be given training during the acclimatization day in Khare about rope walking, ice axe, walking with crampons, and climbing language.
The trail from Khare to Mera Peak High Camp is rugged and the crampon section starts from base camp. The location of the Mera High Camp is rocky on the ridge face that offers breathtaking scenery of glacier and mountains. Early in the morning around 1 am or 2 am, the summit push starts. The continuous walking on the snow mass with few meters of steep climb before reaching the top is the feature of this ascent. You need to be aware of few crevasses along the way. After the summit, climbers return back to Khare and retrace the same trail back to Lukla.
In an average, the Mera Peak Climbing cost starts from 2150 $. The cost depends upon the preferences of climbers and the itinerary.
