Mardi Himal Trekking
15/Mar/2024

The Mardi Himal Trek offers a captivating journey through the lesser-known gem of the Annapurna region in Nepal. Situated to the east of the Annapurna Base Camp route, this relatively new trekking trail provides adventurers with a remarkable blend of natural beauty, cultural encounters, and serene landscapes.

Trekking along the Mardi Himal trail allows you to witness stunning views of towering peaks like Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, Hiunchuli, and Mardi Himal itself. The route takes you through lush rhododendron forests, picturesque villages, and alpine meadows, offering a tranquil escape from the hustle and bustle of daily life.

Unlike some of the more popular treks in the region, Mardi Himal Trek provides a sense of solitude and a chance to immerse yourself in the local culture, as you interact with the warm-hearted villagers along the way. The trek typically takes around 5-7 days to complete, making it an ideal option for those seeking a shorter yet rewarding trekking experience in the Annapurna region.

With its breathtaking vistas, cultural richness, and manageable duration, the Mardi Himal Trek is an excellent choice for both novice and experienced trekkers looking to explore the wonders of the Nepalese Himalayas.

History of the Mardi Himal Trek

The Mardi Himal Trek is a relatively new addition to Nepal’s trekking routes, gaining popularity among trekkers in recent years. While the trek itself has a shorter history compared to more established routes like the Annapurna Circuit or Everest Base Camp Trek, its roots lie in the exploration of the Annapurna region and the desire to offer alternative trekking experiences to visitors.

The Mardi Himal Trek route was first explored by trekkers and local guides seeking new trails and viewpoints in the Annapurna region. As they ventured into the area east of the Annapurna Base Camp, they discovered the stunning beauty of the Mardi Himal and its surrounding landscapes.

Initially, the trail was used by locals for herding yaks and for agricultural purposes. However, as word spread about the breathtaking scenery and relatively untouched nature of the area, trekking companies began to organize trips along the Mardi Himal route, introducing it to a wider audience of adventure seekers.

With its panoramic views of the Annapurna range, diverse flora and fauna, and opportunities for cultural interaction with local communities, the Mardi Himal Trek quickly gained popularity among trekkers looking for a more off-the-beaten-path experience in Nepal.

Planning Your Mardi Himal Trek

Research and Choose a Trekking Season: The best time to trek to Mardi Himal is during the spring (March to May) and autumn (September to November) seasons when the weather is generally clear, and the views are stunning. Avoid the monsoon season (June to August) due to heavy rainfall and the possibility of landslides.

Select an Itinerary: Decide on the duration of your trek and choose an itinerary that fits your schedule and fitness level. The standard Mardi Himal Trek typically takes around 5-7 days, but you can customize it according to your preferences.

Book a Trekking Company or Guide: While it’s possible to trek independently, hiring a reputable trekking company or guide is recommended, especially if you’re new to trekking or unfamiliar with the area. They can provide essential support, including permits, accommodation, meals, and navigation assistance.

Obtain Permits and Necessary Documents: Obtain the required trekking permits and TIMS (Trekkers’ Information Management System) card. Your trekking company or guide can assist you with the permit process, ensuring you have all the necessary documents before starting your trek.

Arrange Transportation: Plan your transportation to Pokhara, the starting point of the Mardi Himal Trek. You can travel to Pokhara by bus or domestic flight from Kathmandu. Arrange for transportation from Pokhara to the trailhead, usually at Phedi or Kande, depending on your chosen itinerary.

Pack Essential Gear and Clothing: Prepare a packing list based on the season and duration of your trek. Essential items include trekking boots, comfortable clothing, a waterproof jacket, warm layers, a sleeping bag, trekking poles, a first-aid kit, and personal hygiene items. Pack light but make sure you have all the necessary gear to stay comfortable and safe throughout the trek.

Best Time to Visit Mardi Himal Trek

Spring (March to May):

Spring is considered the best time for trekking in the Mardi Himal region. The weather is generally stable, with clear skies and moderate temperatures.

The rhododendron forests along the trail bloom during this season, painting the landscape with vibrant colors and adding to the beauty of the trek.

The views of the surrounding mountains are exceptionally clear and stunning during this time, offering excellent photo opportunities.

Autumn (September to November):

Autumn is another ideal time for trekking in the Mardi Himal region, offering clear skies, mild temperatures, and stable weather conditions.

The skies are typically clear, providing spectacular views of the mountains, including Machapuchare (Fishtail), Annapurna South, and Hiunchuli.

The trails are less muddy compared to the monsoon season, making trekking more comfortable and enjoyable.

While spring and autumn are considered the peak seasons for trekking in the Mardi Himal region, it’s also possible to trek during the winter (December to February) and summer (June to August) months with proper preparation. However, these seasons come with their challenges:

Winter (December to February):

Winter brings colder temperatures and the possibility of snowfall at higher elevations, which can make trekking more challenging.

Despite the cold weather, the skies are generally clear, offering good visibility for mountain views.

The trail may be less crowded during this time, providing a quieter trekking experience.

Summer (June to August):

Summer coincides with the monsoon season in Nepal, bringing heavy rainfall and the possibility of landslides along the trekking route.

The trails can be muddy and slippery, making trekking more difficult and potentially hazardous.

Clouds and fog often obscure mountain views, reducing visibility.

However, summer treks offer lush green landscapes and fewer crowds on the trail.
