Rara National Park

The Rara National Park is the smallest national park of Nepal which is located in Humla and Jumla districts of Nepal. The park was formed in 1976 to preserve the unique flora and fauna of the place. It is true that the park is home of Siberian birds during summer season as they migrate all the way from Siberia. The park stretches from 2800 m altitude to 4039 m which is the height of a peak situated in the south side of Rara Lake that is called the Chuchemara Peak. Green lush forests of rhododendron, fir, birch, juniper, etc. are major vegetation of the park. There are more than 1070 plant species inside the Rara National Park.

It is recorded that over 241 species of birds are found in the park including Nepal’s national bird the Lophophorous (Danfe). 51 species of mammals like Himalayan Thar, Himalayan leopard, ottor, red panda, etc. are present including 49 wetland species.

Rara Lake

The Rara Lake is the largest fresh water lake of Nepal. It has the water surface of 10.8 sq. kilometres. Peaks of Rumakand and Malikakand in the northern side of the Rara National Park frame the alpine fresh water lake the Rara Lake. This lake is also called as the Mahendra Lake after the name of Late King Mahendra. It is believed that the lake was the most favourite place of then King Mahendra in western region of Nepal. Therefore, he has inked several poems citing the beauty of Rara Lake! Nowadays, the lake and the national park are managed by Nepal Army and local communities. People can do boating, fishing, and hiking in the lake. The water of the lake drains to Mugu Karnali River near Nijhar Khola area.

How long does it take to trek around Rara Lake?

The total hours to make a round on the shores of Rara Lake are about 5 hours including short breaks. There is a provision of horse riding too that takes shorter time. However, the fun of circumambulation of the Rara Lake is much higher than taking a trip on a horse. Interestingly, lots of trekkers and tourists end up riding a horse and taking a snap of picture. It looks spectacular. The distant sight of the Saipal Mountain range makes it even more spectacular.

Jumla to Rara is a cultural excursion

The town of Jumla is famous for its apple farms and medicinal herbs. Majority of people in this region gather medicinal plants and sell it in the market. This is their major source of income including animal husbandry and farming. While doing the Rara trek don’t miss to explore this beautiful town of Jumla. The place is marvellously placed in a valley overlooking beautiful hills and mountains. Juphal airport is sight to behold along with an entire town from nearby hills.

It is indeed the most scenic airport of the world. There are different villages of different ethnic groups. However, in the Rara Lake area near the Murma Danda, majority of people are from Thakur tribes. These people worship Lord Thakur. It is believed that Lord Thakur hit his arrows and allowed the passage of water preventing flood. There is a temple of Lord Thakur in the Murma village nearby Rara Lake.

Alternative way to visit Rara Lake

The construction of road has made it possible for travellers to use the roadway from Jumla to reach Rara Lake. Therefore, several domestic tourists have started visiting Rara Lake either on a motorbike or on a jeep! The road construction has decreased the trekking route but increased the number of visitors to this beautiful place. Kathmandu to Nepalgunj flight is available in the evening as travellers book the evening flight and stay overnight in this city. Early in the morning they can fly to Jumla. Upon reaching Jumla, travellers can hire a jeep and head straight to Rara Lake. This is the most famous and luxurious way to explore the region.

Another alternative way to do Rara Lake Trek in just 4 days is by taking the route of Talcha Airport of Mugu district of Nepal. This airport is rarely used and there is no certainty of getting flight tickets. Therefore, many trekking agencies don’t recommend this way of doing the Rara tour. In about 5 to 6 hours of walking from Talcha Airport, travellers can reach Rara Lake.

Spring is the best time to do Rara Lake Trek

The best season to do trekking activities in Nepal is during autumn and spring season. You can do this trek during autumn season but the best time to do Rara Lake Trek is spring season. The trekking route encompasses green lush forests and grassy meadows. In the spring season, the forests bloom with different species of flowers. Moreover, the skies are clear and temperature is warm.
